The arrested woman’s blog with her story here, with more info: http://blogs.babycenter.com/community_buzz/toddler-taken-by-cps-over-5-00-sandwiches/
Not defending the market, but a pet peeve of mine is people eating in grocery stores. Not food courts, but in the aisles.
People that eat things that get weighed (like grapes) are simply stealing.
It ain't rocket surgery.
I hope the store manager is fired, and the woman fined.
Might have been okay to cut this chick some slack.
IMHO, the store manager should have reminded this woman about the sandwich that was eaten. It could have been a mistake since she paid for fifty dollars of groceries. I have never eaten in a store BUT I have drank in one on occasion. Once when I had to take a prescription and once when I had a allergy/coughing attack. Yes... I paid for my seltzer purchase but simply because a rather large, empty bottle was in the cart.
Hmmmmmm......lots of sandwich stories today. Seems kind of cheesie.
I think I’ve eaten something just once while in the grocery and I put the wrapper on the checkout counter to tally.
For reporting people stealing from him?
They were taken to the main Honolulu police station where they were booked for fourth degree theft. Then Zophia was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.
What would you have them do with the kid? Put her in a cell too, while her thieving parents make bail?
Once, while working at a 7-11, a customer made some nachos and walked right out the door. A couple of policemen were in the store, and I alerted them right away. They went out and talked to the customer. The customer came back, apologized, and paid. End of story.
I’m not sure why the store manager insisted on so much more than immediate payment. Maybe a stern lecture about consuming items before paying for them would have been in order, but more than that is just excessive, IMO.
Nope, very bad idea. You have no idea how much loss occurs this way.
I bet they won’t forget to pay for their sandwiches again. I see people eating food all the time in grocery stores and I bet it adds up to a significant cost to the store, which of course gets passed along to the rest of us. I’m sure every person who is caught has the same “I just forgot to pay” story also.
So..the woman was “feeling faint, dizzy” and decided to eat something without paying for it.
And, the husband also decided to eat a sandwich without paying for it?
He must’ve been “feeling faint, dizzy” too...
You do NOT eat in the grocery store.
If he did that to me and my 3-yr-old, firing would be the nicest thing to happen to him, and by no means the only thing.
No chance BOTH these parents “forgot” they ordered AND ATE sandwiches when they were checking out. The very fact security noticed this and asked for the receipt indicates it has happened before.
Highly likely these slugs figured they would not get noticed anymore then someone who takes a grape from the fruit bib is noticed.
They got what was coming to them and i hope they get fined 10 times the value of the sandwiches PLUS court costs.
.......with all due respect rawhide, I have a little different take. I think the store manager was likely just following “policy” from execs on high which means one or more or all of them should be fired.
The problem these execs don’t get and that is illustrated by this incident is that when “government” gets involved in a situation it is like brushing your teeth with a wire brush.......it is always, always OVER-KILL !!!
Dumbass cop mentality took over and BOTH parents went to jail leaving the baby with CPS. Dumb! If arrests just had to happen, they should not have arrested both parents so that one of them could have taken the baby over-night. The obvious fact that the woman was pregnant should have exempted her from jail for christ’s sake. Like I said, if you want to understand what happened here, go brush your teeth with a wire brush!
I hope the store manager gets his/her photo in the Hawaii newspapers showing their being awarded a nice bonus check for a job well done! Dollars to dog biscuits this couple are nothing more or less than freeloading leeches. And doing it in HAWAII yet! That REALLY torques me! The least they could have done was to come to the Mainland and freeze their tushes on Wall St.
I leave any empty containers in the cart until I pay for everything at checkout and have had no problems. Perhaps this was an innocent mistake, perhaps not, there's no way to know for sure. Still, I think the Safeway manager made the wrong decision.
