I haven't read the article yet, but I'm with you on this. I have never eaten anything (or given food to whining children) in a grocery store until I've paid for it. How do I know that my credit card won't go through when I get to the register? There have been times when my credit card doesn't work because there was some suspicious activity and the bank cut it off. And eating things that have to be weighed? Unbelievable!

Absolutely. I had the experience a couple of weeks ago of finding my debit card cut off. When I called the bank, it turned out that someone had tried to make a $2,200 and a $365 purchase on line with my debit card. Then, because I had to start using my credit cards (which I never do), that alerted the two credit card companies of possible fraud on my account, which caused them also to be cut off. It's embarrassing enough to not be able to pay for things at the check-out; having already consumed some of the items would be worse than embarrassing.

Oh, I have a new debit card. It was broken in yesterday.

Made me think of a humorous anecdote Erma Bombeck once told about grocery shopping when her kids were little. An irate grocer caught the littlest one eating grapes off of the display. In the argument that ensued, Bombeck offered to have her child weighed and she'd pay for anything over 30 pounds.
