Cain Says He Should Have Spoken Up For Gay Soldier
Associated Press ^ | October 2, 2011

Posted on 10/02/2011 3:00:31 PM PDT by Baladas

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Sunday that he should not have stayed silent after the audience at a GOP debate booed a gay soldier serving in Iraq.

The Georgia businessman told ABC's "This Week" that it would have been "appropriate" for him to have defended the soldier. None of the candidates on stage at the Sept. 22 forum responded to the boos.

"In retrospect, because of the controversy it has created and because of the different interpretations that it could have had, yes, that probably — that would have been appropriate," Cain said, when asked if he should have asked the audience to respect the soldier.

Cain said it wasn't immediately clear to him what had drawn the audience's scorn, adding, "I happen to think that maybe they were booing the whole 'don't ask, don't tell' repeal more so than booing that soldier."

The so-called don't ask, don't tell policy barring gays from serving openly in the military was officially lifted last month.

Come on! We’re running out of decent candidates here! I was kind of poo-poohing one potential candidate there for awhile, but now I’ll say it: “Run, Sarah, Run!”

“evidently Cain was shown the story before he commented, since he knew what the name of the place was, even though the interviewer didn’t tell him.”

-

Not doubting you, but did any other FReepers notice that?

That would be rather underhanded by Cain, if true.

Cain should have said “I don’t know the details of what you are talking about. Tell the to me, and don’t leave out any significant details to trick me to saying what you want to hear”. In fact before today, it is what I would have expected to hear from him.

I could vote for the guy on that one statement alone, had he done so.

This is disappointing.

I think the RINO establishment had a little talk with Herman Cain last week

I think you're absolutely right.

Cain came from the Federal Reserve System. Can't get much more "entrenched" "establishment" and "elite" than that.

how can you possibly be for Perry given his open border position?

He's not for an open border. He wants UAVs and troops on the border. He has added Texas Rangers to enforce the border.

OTOH, somebody sure seems to be whispering in the ears of conservatives that he wants an open border.

You are nothing but an evil maggot that belongs in hell. You're the disease and I'm the cure. I've had it with you and I've had it with the wimpy candidates we have in the ring. Momma grizzly Palin is going to take all of you down real soon.

Actually he was cheered by the audience until he began his homosexual agenda, that is what they booed. Love the feigned outrage tactic, it works every time on Conservatives.

Pray for America

Exactly. He was actually standing up for the audience here.

Herman Cain lost both his Director of Communications and his Assistant to the Director of Communications, both resigning yesterday. Perhaps that is why he has imploded in the media today perhaps. ????

I'm more influenced that Cain played into the liberals hands by jumping on the N*****head rock lie about the Perry's hunting lease. Cain made a judgement without any fact...just rumor.

I question his judgement now...will he react to any/all racial accusations/comments?

Than is correct. You have nothing to apologize for.

Really. Cain has no voting record, his words and actions are all that’s able to be relied upon. First “Islamaphobia, then “racism”, now “homophobia”.

I was thinking the same thing. Must be some kind of rino addiction because Perry and Romney are just that. The better candidates are in the so called lower tier.

First he plays the Race Card, now the Gay Card.

This is soooo disappointing.

Right when I was starting to like Rick Perry, he calls me "heartless" because I don't want to pay for educating the children of ILLEGAL ALIENS in our country. I was all for giving Rick Perry a fair hearing and ignoring his critics here on FR, but that comment was just too much for me.

So I dump Rick Perry. There's just no recovering from that one IMO.

I liked Herman Cain at the beginning, but he was lacking depth. As the debates went on, I started liking Herman Cain more and more.

Now he starts chastising the base over "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and plays and the race card! You know it's one thing for a candidate to defend their values, it's quite another to throw a sop to the black and gay communities as he's doing and frankly that disgusts me.

Ok, so the two candidates I *wanted to like* are done for IMO. I just can't vote for either now. I'm still all about "Anyone But Obama" at this point, but geez, I really don't want to hold my nose during an election again, so it better not be Romney or Paul. I don't think I could bear holding my nose again (ala McCain) because I'm really sick and damn' tired of choosing between the lesser of two evils every damn' election!

Where's a good Fiscally and Socially Conservative supposed to go?

I’m convinced that he’s an open border guy. He’s not for the fence and border agents cost a lot more money, as do troops. He’s at least equal to W on border issues - not good.

Make another pick, besides what about N@ggerhead, not good.
