The BBC has been accused of bowing to political correctness after it emerged that it was discouraging the use of the terms BC and AD for fear of offending non-Christians.
The Corporation's religion website states that it opts for the "religiously neutral" Common Era and Before Common Era, rather than Anno Domini (the year of Our Lord) and Before Christ.
It goes on: "As the BBC is committed to impartiality it is appropriate that we use terms that do not offend or alienate non-Christians."
But critics said the changes were meaningless because, just like AD and BC, the alternative terms still denote years in relation to the life of Christ.

This is more proof, if any was needed, that most of Europe is in a post-Christian era.
I read books with a pen in hand. When I see this non-sense of CE and BCE, I scratch it out and put in AD and BC.

I just read “CE” as “Christian Era” and “BCE” as “Before the Christian Era”.
Actually, scholarly journals and dissertations have used the BCE and CE moniker for 20 years or more...yes, for totally PC reasons.
It certainly did NOT start with Wikipedia...and I’m very surpised the BBC itself hasn’t used this for years.
To me it is a bit silly...since it is referring to the same calendar system as BC and AD.

Where I took my high school education and my introduction to the discipline?
Where I began my university education?
Where I finally undertook my discipline as a historian?
Where I began my instruction?

I remember hearing those terms used back when I was in college, early 1980’s. It goes back a long while.
We always called it Boring British Crap.

I lived up in Boston form some time and found half of historians were liberals but since moving down here I have found in St Augustine FL to east TN they tend to be more conservative.
The teachers my kids have had have all been conservative and my oldest had a great teacher who taught them that BCE is what some are saying but he still uses BC etc.
Humanists have been using it for at least 30 years.

I only found this info since moving over here from England in the last few years.
However I do know that the site I gave was started because of wikipedia but again thank you for that correction.
Like another poster said one could change the letters to before Christs era and Christs era, still IMHO this is all stupid and it should stay as BC AD

Oh! I thought CE stood for Christ’s Era. Actually it does. Funny thedse PC wizards do not mind offending Christians.

It started a long before there ever was an internet. CE and BCE are the common normal terms used by archeologists working on non-Christian parts of world history, because it’s silly to date Chinese statues based on events in the Mediterranean.
