Republican Gay Rights Group Demands Apology from Santorum
CBS News ^ | September 23, 2011 | Lucy Madison

Posted on 09/23/2011 10:01:23 AM PDT by lbryce

Members of the conservative gay rights group GOProud are demanding an apology from Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum for what they call his disrespectful comments directed at a gay soldier in Thursday night's GOP presidential debate.

"Tonight, Rick Santorum disrespected our brave men and women in uniform, and he owes Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who asked him the question about Don't Ask, Don't Tell repeal, an immediate apology," said GOProud's Christopher Barron and Jimmy LaSalvia in a Thursday night press release.

During the Fox News/Google-sponsored debate, which took place in Orlando, Florida, a gay soldier deployed in Iraq asked the candidates if they would take measures to "circumvent" the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," if elected president.

Some audience members audibly booed the soldier -- a moment the GOP candidates on stage chose to ignore.

GOProud also noted that Santorum, who answered the question, declined to thank the soldier for his service, and called the repeal of DADT "social experimentation" - and "tragic."

"I would say any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military," Santorum responded. "And the fact that they're making a point to include it as a provision within the military that we are going to recognize a group of people and give them a special privilege to -- and removing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' I think tries to inject social policy into the military. And the military's job is to do one thing, and that is to defend our country."

A homosexual serving in the military isn't wrong. An OPENLY homosexual is.

Which is why "I support the continuation of DADT. It has worked well for two decades" would have been the best and most straightforward thing for Santorum (or any other candidate) to say.

I don’t know what your problem is but trisham does not support the homosexual agenda.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nor did I say he did support the homosexual agenda. So please... Don’t butt into an argument where you - admittedly - don’t know the issues.
Thanks.
Fortunately for practising homosexuals, there is never any blood splattered around on a battlefied and so the environment is not made all that more dangerous by what is in essence an extension of germ warfare. Anyone who thinks this needs a /sarc tag needs to ask themselves if they would want Doc treating their open wound after just treating Chrissy’s open wound.)
I hear you and I agree. When a society ignores the most basic realities, it's a sign of cultural insanity. I believe that this incident is one of the reasons many of us objected to Coulter's involvement with GOProud. It seemed to us that she was, whether intentionally or not, validating their organization and so its goals.
They may be “Gay Republicans”, but they’re not conservatives. And Santorum has nothing to apologize for.
Saying Gays can't be Conservative is judging the whole group by the people who are at the gay pride parades. (Where you won't ever find my friend!!)
"THANK YOU!
Finally, a voice of reason. (You know we will both be called liberals, now, don't you?)
“You keep saying you would not boo him.”
“We naturally take that to mean you support him.”
Simply because I do not Boo someone, somehow means I support that person?
Wow.
For some reason liberal progressives always seem to thjink that THEIR view is the more ELEVATED, the more PROGRESSIVE, the ONLY acceptable moral high-ground, and the BEST politically correct approach for EVERYONE.
In a sane world, everyone would know that the classless one in this scenario was the guy admitting before millions of people on TV that he takes it up the crapper.
Pray tell, what is classy about that?
I demand that “gay republicans” come clean for the liberal moles they truly are and slink back into their democrat hidey-holes.
Santorum’s answer was courageous and respectful. I’m SICK TO DEATH of these queers and their society-ruining demands.
Bugger off, queers.
Except that sex among the troops in the military is forbidden. His answer was correct.
http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/dont-ask-dont-tell-may-go-militarys-dont-do-sodomy-law-still-place
“Any person subject to this chapter [of the UCMJ] who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy,” Article 125 of the UCMJ states. “Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”
There is also the point of "good order and discipline". Anything that interferes with that is also subject to court martial.
What does he have to apologize for? Santorum basically said that the government has no business formulating policy based upon sexual preference. Basically, everyone should be treated the same with no special treatment for anyone.
Before the recent change in law, the government was not allowed to ask someone their sexual preference, and rightly so. It just isn't their damn business. But with the new law, they can ask.
Just as the communists have the goal of taking over all parts of our society - schools, churches, government, unions, art, media, military, etc,
so do the homos.
Yeah, I know about “consenting adults,” and all that means to me is you’ve chosen to jettison one moral principle and retain another that doesn’t get you any grief from others hobbyists like yourself.
That's a very good point!
Don’t butt into an argument where you - admittedly - don’t know the issues.
Except that I do know the issue. You questioned where trisham was coming from on the point they made. I happen to know. You obviously do not.
What I don't know is what the heck your problem is. Only YOU know.
“Like gays who deliberately lied about their sexual orientation.”
What evidence do you have that Hill lied about his sexual orientation?
He served the vast majority of his service under DADT.
If they did not ask and he did not tell, how could he lie?
Dammit. I’ve given you every opportunity to be negative of gays serving in the military - and you just won’t do it.
You did say you do not support the repeal of DADT, but that’s not enough to convince us that you are OK with gays serving.
Now do you see why we are convinced that you support a gay-friendly military?
Did they really Boo a member of the American Military who served in Iraq? If so, that is low class.
No, they booed a man who decided to talk about his sex acts of choice in front of millions of people.
In a sane world, the booing would have drowned out his pathetic question.
