'Epic' flooding breaches Outer Banks highway

Manteo, N.C. — The Outer Banks are no stranger to a Category 1 hurricane like Irene, which hit Saturday with 85 mph winds and heavy rain.

But Irene's eye tracked just west of the Pamlico, Croatan and Albermarle sounds, then crossed the Currituck Sound to go back out to sea.

That drew water from the sounds, as well the ocean, west. The water piled up in bays, inlets and rivers on the western side of the sounds. Once the hurricane passed, that water rushed east back, smashing into the barrier islands.

"The soundside flooding last night was epic as far as our county is concerned," Dare County Commissioner Warren Judge said Sunday.

Ooh, maybe Obama can get those electoral votes in NC again! Northeast counties near the Va border, Kinston, maybe even Lumberton? Count on it.

I certainly hope there isn't a bailout. I love going to OBX and I have rented a house on the oceanfront of Mirlo Beach. If you look at the pictures, you'll see what appears to be a new inlet cut there. The island there is very, very narrow. I had always thought it was one storm away from becoming an inlet. It also should have been obvious to anyone building houses there.

I have no problem with people building in places like this. It is a risk that they take. As someone living in PA, I didn't take that risk and I shouldn't have to pay for it other than by renting a home there. In that, I have a choice.

The Outer Banks = sand dunes on a sand spit poking out of the ocean; pretty to look at but unfit for human habitation

So true. I was there a year ago on vacation. I went into the Harris Teeter Supermarket and I asked the manager if he lived on the OBX.

he told me that he lives on the mainland 20 miles away. He can't afford the homes there. (the least expensive shack was about 200K).

Yep, that is the main thing with canes...the water surge...that's the killer and is where more damage is done many times than the wind....that's what we saw with IKE and Bolivar Peninsular...

If this disaster isn’t brought under control, cars may splash each other, and get into accidents. This looks like a job for—Obaman! Take charge, Obaman. Visit the coordination center. Make encouraging noises come out of your face while talking to FEMA. You won’t let this one turn into another Hurricane Katherine.

Most of the homes are rental homes on the OBX. The people that work there cannot afford to buy, or rent, unless their families have been there for years and years and already owned land.

Slightly off topic ... I’ve not seen any stories on how many New Yorkers have hurricane insurance.

Down south you need both hurricane and flood insurance as if you do get water damage and only have one or the other the flood insurance carrier will say that was hurricane damage and the hurricane carrier will say it was flood damage.

If you have both you can just let them fight it out - at least you’re covered. ;-)

And your point is? There are plenty of people around me that can't afford to buy or rent where I live in central PA. They can live in Harrisburg cheaply if they want, but not in the township where I live. There are also plenty of places where I can't afford to live. I'm taking care of my family and helping my neighbors. I see no need to have my hard earned money to be confiscated by the federal government, washed through Washington, DC only to see pennies on the dollar make it to NC. If things were really bad in NC, I'd consider giving to a good and efficient charity to get results. But this storm isn't that bad. It is a bit more worse than a Nor'easter in the dead of winter. Folks in NC can take care of their own in this case.

This nation has turned into a bunch of wussies that need to suck from the teat of government for everything. It is as if no one can do anything or survive anything without the help of the government. It is frickin amazing how people survived in this country just 50 or 100 years ago. Please excuse me while I put my bike helmet on so I don't bump my head and I can look like our faggot pResident.

There is only one other political leader in America that is less suited to serve than Beverly Perdue.
