Manteo, N.C. The Outer Banks are no stranger to a Category 1 hurricane like Irene, which hit Saturday with 85 mph winds and heavy rain.
But Irene's eye tracked just west of the Pamlico, Croatan and Albermarle sounds, then crossed the Currituck Sound to go back out to sea.
That drew water from the sounds, as well the ocean, west. The water piled up in bays, inlets and rivers on the western side of the sounds. Once the hurricane passed, that water rushed east back, smashing into the barrier islands.
"The soundside flooding last night was epic as far as our county is concerned," Dare County Commissioner Warren Judge said Sunday.

I love the outer banks. Ocracoke is one of my favorite destinations.
That being said, there's got to be a stop to this bailout mania. People who choose to build or buy near the coast need to assume responsibility for their choice. As for the rest, nature will balance itself out.

Having been under the rule of Democrat majorities in both the NC House and Senate with the occasional Republican governor, this state squandered two opportunities to either return or bank two $1Billion dollar surpluses during the 90’s. Mama Perdue is the DemocRat governor so she'll be out front in asking for Federal relief. And yes she is the prototypical DemocRat that believes taxes are the answer and never spending cuts. She still has designs on making this a unionized state vs. the right to work state we have now. Pat McCrory is her prospective opponent in 2012. She was elected on Obama’s coattails but is yet to declare her support. She will be the skinny, ugly biatch with the overly exaggerated drawl representing the state when the DNC convention comes to Charlotte, one of two liberal enclaves within the state.

this bailout maniaTicks me off. So these folks get oceanfront views on my dime. Do I get a free stay? It should work like a timeshare - for every dollar the taxpayer pays in as a percentage, that's how much time they should be able to use the property. And I said "TaxPAYER", not the free-for-all nincompoops.

I wonder if a Cat 4,or 5 hurricane back 400 or 500 years ago was what was responsible for the loss of the settlement at Croatan? Just wondering. Its still classified as a mystery as far as I know. They would have had no warning and FEMA certainly was not yet the super safety net that it now has become.

OBX is a great area. Dramatic, a 200 mile sliver of little more than beach. Kind of place that needs community support to survive in ... and that none outside that area should be obligated to support it. Great for those who choose to live there, not the problem of those who don’t.
(btw: I’d like to)

The Outer Banks = sand dunes on a sand spit poking out of the ocean;
pretty to look at but unfit for human habitation.

...Same thing with Sandbridge in VA. I was there for two storms, not this one. Watched two houses crash into the water at the s-curve...
...Right now, a program called "What Matters" is talking about the planning for everything they've screwed up at the oceanfront and Norfolk Waterside. That place is a 200 yr. old landfill and is sinking...
