Synopsis: Eleven-year old girl saves baby woodpecker from being eaten by family cat at Dad's house. Mother puts woodpecker in cage to take to her home to make sure it's o.k. On way home, brought into store out of sun. Female US Fish and Wildlife agent shopping there shows badge, confronts mother about violation of migratory bird act and takes name. Mother releases bird when she arrives home and notifies F&WS.
Two weeks later agent shows up with VA state trooper at home to issue citation. Mother refuses to sign and is issued court warrant.
Update: According to the website, F&WS this p.m. now says its all a big mistake and citation should never have been issued and is sending an apology.
Your federal government at work.

Oh, I don’t know. Once we start getting lax with our woodpecker laws it’s a slippery slope to all hell breaking loose!

Hopefully the overzealous agent is fired. Bad cops need to go.

I had to read it twice to make sure they weren’t talking about England.

Without publicity, this woman would have been sunk.

“Your federal government at work.”
It shows how many of these malefactors are crawling around, too.

“Mother releases bird when she arrives home “
No mention if the cat got it again?
To: CedarDave
Thank you Cedar, your synopsis made more sense than the article.

The moral of the story is that it’s a bad idea to play with strange peckers.

Mother releases bird when she arrives home No mention if the cat got it again?Typical family these days; Mom and Dad have different homes.
To: CedarDave
Why don’t they prosecute the cat?
To: sand lake bar
Off with their head.
They had someone dyslexic in the office, they wrote up the report instead of reading Wood Pecker, it said Pecker Wood.
They assumed it was a threat against Congress.

Even though it was US F&WL, it sounds like the VA Dept. of Game and Inland Fisheries. A couple of their agents were stationed at a dock on the intracoastal waterway in Chesapeake, VA some years ago. They were near a favorite spot for boaters to gather and were indiscriminately waving boats over. They waved me over and demanded I take a sobriety test. Even though I showed them that the strongest drink I had on board was O’Douls (NA beer). Only when they found that I was NOT intoxicated, did they even mention that I was violating the No Wake Zone there. I tried to explain that I was barely making steerageway with the current there but they ticketed me anyway.
