Post office looking to close offices to save money

WASHINGTON (AP) The Postal Service is launching a study of thousands of local post offices for possible closure in an effort to save money.
The cash-strapped agency, which lost $8 billion last year, scheduled a briefing for Tuesday at which it is expected to announce the action.
Most of the approximately 3,600 offices that face reviews are in rural areas, but postal official say they are looking into alternate service, such as locating offices in local businesses, town halls or community centers.
In those cases the so-called Village Post Office would replace one to be closed.
And coming under review doesn't necessarily mean an office will close. The post office announced in January it was reviewing 1,400 offices for closing. So far 280 have been closed and 200 have finished the review process and will remain open.

The bulk mail section of the us mail, is nothing more than an affirmative action hiring center, sell it to several trucking firms and stop the bleeding and deliver mail three days a week, and no more buying employee houses.
Within the 5 miles from my house to the grocery store there are 5 different post offices.
The landlords always know.
The house buying trick is not unknown in the private sector. In fact, with some industries it's so normal they don't imagine it could be any other way.
The problem with USPS is it's not private industry and has a bunch of people sniffing it's nether regions constantly ~ they are called "the public" and they think they own the place.
As far as EIEIO hiring the USP is America's largest single employer of African-Americans. Yet, they have to meet the same high standards as the white people. No stealing. No dawdling. No using dope. Etc. All pretty basic stuff. It's been that way since LONG BEFORE EIEIO.

They'd been telling that story since about 1975.
It's an excuse for less than vigorous efforts at the top.
As the Clintonistas began disappearing from the Board of Governors their management team continued to throw roadblocks in the way of Republicans getting promoted in management ranks.
The only good thing that happened was Marvin Runyon finally left the top job. He had been a big supporter of Lamar Alexander in his ambition to become President. Obviously that wasn't going to happen to Lamar as long as he depended on people like Runyon who never saw a Republican they liked nor a lesbian they could pass up for promotion.
A truly disgusting old man he definitely did USPS and its workforce NO FAVORS
Just like General Motors became a benefits distribution center. Car manufacturing got in the way.
Then we need a Constitutional Amendment so that the whole sorry mess can be privatized!
When you pay your mailmen $90K on 40 cent stamps the model just doesn’t work anymore. Time to cut the wages.

4 miles W. of town is another small town, (has a PO and a mom and pop party store). That's all...
8 miles south of here is another PO but the town is at least a town with business's on main street. But a lot of empty buildings also...The gas station is the largest business, its always full of cars...
You have to go about 12 miles north to get another PO. But from that town west again 8 miles is another PO.
It seems just about every burg with one business also has a post office...they could close quite a few just in my area alone...consolidate to one with 3 windows and it would be fine...
The one 4 miles west has hardly any customers and when I wanted no lines, I would go there...
I am curious as to how many employee's these combined PO have and what type of salary and pension they get....I get rural delivery, mail box at the road.
One of those towns does not deliver if you live within 1/2 mile of the PO you have to get a PO box...(might be 1 mile, I moved out 10 years ago and forgot the distance) I got home delivery but those in the middle of the little town all had PO boxes...don't know if a PO box cost money or not...
Starting soon medicare payments and insurance premiums are going to be handled w/o paper; they are going to deduct your premiums owed from your SS check and deposit any remainder into your specified bank account. If you have a question about amounts, errors, or just a question, look for that to be handled online.
I recall The Usurping Marxist Onada providing the PO as an example of a successful gov’t enterprise. What happened in the year or so since he said that?
Hello Conservative candidates, do ya think that would make a great campaign ad?

I live in Ignacio, CO
Everyone within the "city" limits has a POBox, no home delivery. Businesses get charged for the Box, citizens do not.
This is a SMALL town and surrounded by Tribal land.

Along with 'post roads', the Federal Highways.
The Federal Highways (post roads) are constructed and maintained by private contractors. The Post Offices can be run the same way. I've lived in several places where the community post office was operated inside and by the local grocery store. It works just fine. Great service.
The solution is to close about 28,000 small post offices and stations, and replace their delivery service with rural carriers.
I’d rather they close, and deliver the flippin’ mail. We and our correspondents are paying for it.
Rural route delivery has been a proven methodology for nearly a century. it's time to adopt it eh!
A Post Road is one where a postal vehicle (owned by USPS or contracted for) can travel without charge or restriction.

Near as I can tell postal vehicles don’t have to pay to travel on any road anyway. They don’t even have license plates (a fact that unfortunately became evident to me when one of them sideswiped me and then took off a number of years ago)
