A south Bossier City homeowners association has sued to force a family to remove a front yard sign supporting their son's military service because it violated subdivision covenants.
The Burrs placed a large multicolored banner with a picture of their 20-year-old son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Burr, and the phrase "Our son defends our freedom" in January after Corey Burr was deployed to Afghanistan.

Is that like an HOA?? Those things are evil.
Sheesh. People move into HOA neighborhoods because they’re safer and cleaner, and then complain about the rules that made them safer and cleaner.
Reminds me of illegals.
They won’t be for long because of Section 8.
Given that other signs are acceptable, seems to me like the HOA has lost the right to disallow the Burr's sign
“HOA neighborhoods because they’re safer and cleaner,”
Please explain how putting up a sign with your son’s picture, who is deployed, makes the neighborhood less “safe and clean”.
I live in fairly nice gated community governed by the rules of a homeowners association. Two points.
1. If anyone could put up a sign, poster, flag, etc. things could get out of hand pretty quickly, and property values could/would fall. Personally, if I wanted to live in a ghetto, I’d go buy a house in my boyhood home located in the Newark, NJ area.
2. If someone doesn’t want to adhere to the rules of the Homeowners Association, they shouldn’t have moved there.
Given that other signs are acceptable, seems to me like the HOA has lost the right to disallow the Burr's sign
They shouldn’t enter into contracts that they don’t plan to keep. I have low tolerance for folks who think that the rules apply to everyone but them.
However, this could have been handled much better..the HOA could have adopted a rule allowing, say, for a 30 day display of a sign to honor anyone who lives there and is now serving in the military..
Sure, that’s what you see in ghettos, patriotic signs with pictures of soldiers deployed... (/sarc)
yes.
If the sort of signery that’s allowed is listed in the HOA rules, the Burrs might or might not have a chance with similar signs that aren’t in the blessed list.
How is that Hope and Change crap working for you? A Flag doesn’t pull down property values, a terrible policy at the Fed level does. Have a great Navy/Marine day.
I found my new tagline in the article.
Right On! This is why I live in an HOA. We all bitch about something that they require us to do but the other side is when anyone that visits my neighborhood they tell us how well kept up it is. Nuff said.
True, but according to the Burrs others have signs posted with no problem. The HOA isn’t following their own rule. It appears that the HOA may be picking and choosing. That makes the rule null and void as in arbitrary and capricious.
They need to run for an HOA office and start striking down stupid rulings.
HOA’s are communist and for yuppies who have nothing better to do with their life than walk around their neighborhood seeing if people’s curtains are trashy or if kids are climbing trees GOD FORBID. I also have heard of people being cited by the HOA assoc. that their garbage can was not in the correct spot or left out too long.
One would think seeing signs supporting their schools would increase property values as it shows good family values and support of others living in the neighborhood.
