Boehner says McConnell plan "might look pretty good in a few weeks"
Washington Examiner ^ | 07/14/11 | Philip Klein

Posted on 07/14/2011 5:17:57 PM PDT by Qbert

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, just told reporters that he thought Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's so-called "last resort" option for resolving the debt ceiling stalemate should be left on the table.

"Mitch described it as a 'last ditch,'" Boehner said, adding that whatever people think of it at the moment, if no deal is reached, "it might look pretty good a few weeks from now."

The McConnell proposal, which would give Obama the ability to raise the debt limit by as much as $2.5 trillion without Republicans directly voting on it, has been deemed by many as "dead on arrival" in the House, but when asked whether he thought it had the votes to pass, Boehner merely responded, "I have no idea."

Boehner also dismissed the idea of tensions between himself and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, as well as charges that the Virginia Republican has been unhelpful to the talks.

"We've been in this fight together, " Boehner said, standing next to Cantor. "We're in the foxhole. I'm glad Eric is there, and anyone who has a different opinion, they can keep that to themselves."

They need to explain this promptly.

Yes if this is what we see as a cave, we will have a third party and they will be out of work.

“Those Republicans that do not stand firm in protecting the citizens and the Nation from further crippling debt will lose their jobs in the next elections.”

Any Repub in a red district that goes along with this deserves to be primaried.

GOP weenies famous for pulling defeat from the jaws of victory. Maybe the nation needs a collective lesson of epic proportions. Its madness and beyond rationale at this point.

I never liked the ‘third party’ theory, but if there is enough
disenfranchised people, it might be the way to go.

These wimps have got to go.

The McConnell/McCain plan is tantamount to...

“Help me! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

Honest to God, we have some of the lamest people in positions of power. It’s scarey how stupid these people are.

This is a plan to allow Obama to request a debt limit increase formally.

Congress and the Senate would have to block it by vote. (50% +1 margin? Not sure) If they did, he would be allowed to veto the bill and that would be it.

It gives the president the power to raise the debt limit unilaterally.

This McConnell, McCain, and now Boehner thinks either is or will be a great idea.

This is insufferably lame. It operates on the premise Obama will get all the credit for continuing to build debt. Screw the nation, but Obama will get blamed.

No he won’t. It will continue to be obvious that the Republicans caved. I’m going to be angry about it, and everyone else will be too.

Just damn!!!!

Boehner needs to get his freshmen in line and pass a $1.5 trillion in cuts for $1.5 trillion in debt ceiling increase. It sucks, I know, but it is the only way to put 0bama on the spot and make him feel and look like the loser. He’ll have to ask for more money right before the election. In the meantime, the House Republicans can pass bills over and over to cut spending between now and then.

I think Boehner may have done a good thing with his comments.

He telegraphed to Obama and Reid that he is not backing down a bit and the August 2 deadline is not going to change his mind (or, more correctly, he can’t get the Republican House to vote for new taxes).

He also knows that the McConnell plan is DOA in the House, but it LOOKS LIKE the Republicans are offering solutions, even though they are non-starters.

—Yep, I’m with you.

And the *only* way I’d be willing to consider a $2.4T hike in exchange for $1.5 T in cuts in a one-shot deal is if there was something substantial thrown in there that is satisfactory to us. Otherwise, what’s the point in forfeiting nearly Trillion dollars in bargaining power for nothing?

..."Just exactly how does this prevent further, unbounded spending?".....

His brilliant strategy was merely to be able to blame 0bama and 0bama alone for further destroying the economy.

Totally worth it, IMHO. Telling our grand kids who is to blame for selling them into slavery; being able to assign direct blame on one specific individual, will make them feel, oh, so much better about their slavery.

No, Mitch the (rhymes with Mitch) offered the deal requiring a 2/3 majority to deny it.

Why raise the debt limit if you get 1.5 trillion in what a man on the stree would call cuts? Why would further debt be necessary if they passed a budget for this year, based on 2004 levels, and attached a rider that the difference already sent to the different departments must be returned by August 2?

You have no idea what you’re talking about.

We have to hold firm on the debt ceiling, and cut whatever it takes to maintain it.

We cannot allow Obama to extract his vote buying money out of the US Treasury, and that is exactly what this is all about.

The GOP leadership is against us just as much as the Dems.

We have to pound the individual congress members of both houses every minute of every day.

Yes, McConnell has been very disappointing.

However, I am not convinced that we have anyone on our side that could be at point and do much better in this environment.

For our country to survive, Obama and the democrats must be removed from power.... even then it’s going to be tough.

In a couple of weeks McConnells plan will still be a turd.
