WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Monday increased pressure on Republican lawmakers to make concessions for a deal to avoid an August 2 debt default and said both sides must "pull off the Band-aid" and make sacrifices.

"If not now, when?" Obama said.

It is inevitable that the proverbial "line in the sand" is someday going to turn into the "edge of the cliff".

The most insane game of brinkmanship that Democrats played was Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Thankfully Ronald Reagan acted like an adult and the rest is history; the Soviet Union ended up on the ash-heap of history where it belonged.

The stakes are not as high this time. But this time, the consequences are almost as bad. When the Democrats successfuly push the line in the sand to finally become the edge of the cliff, it is not only the Democrats, but also the United States who will be the ones that end up on the ash-heap of history

All of the pressure on the Republicans should be “no tax hikes” period.

"If not now, when?" Obama said.

When? After you and your teleprompter sit on the ash heap of history and are viewed as the worst President in the history of the United States...and that even includes Jimmy Carter. Never before has any President been as clueless and inept about economics as you, sir. Either that or your agenda is to destroy the United States. Those are the only choices...pick one, then turn around and shut up.

The “Pea Lobby” must have some significant clout, to get that part scrubbed so quickly.

Not sure where this pressure is coming from? Nearly sixty percent of the country has turned Obama off. A vast majority don’t want the ceiling raised if it means tax increases. And this not now, when? stuff is laughable.

He has been President for over two years and he has never signed a budget.

“IF NOT NOW, WHEN??” That's the pressure ?? LOL, what a joke.

Tell tax cheat Geitner to talk to his boss 'Obe' about the dire consequences of his own ultimatums.

Hey, Repubbies!!! Bamster and the "Pea Party" are the only one pressuring you.

The majority of American's (70%) don't want the debt ceiling raised and believe in the free market system.

Got that?

obama's game, is like a child's game, his rants and pouts only work if we give a flying f*** what he and his pet media says.

The democrats are a party of "shock jocks", they think the things they "say" are going to drive us to serve their will.

But like spoiled children, if we continue to ignore them, or laugh in their faces, they will eventually lose it and go into a full, unbridled tantrum.

It's a staring game, waiting on a blink.

Obama is in NO position to demand anything; he has totally ruined this economy and borrowing more money or raising taxers won't fix it.

When the buttholes get around to following the Contitution and putting our a budget like they are supposed to, perhaps we could take them as something more than frat boys at a toga party and talk...but the way it is, it's just going to be obama and his petulant, smart-ass mouth making threats...

both sides must "pull off the Band-aid"

Classic double talk. Who spent the bailouts and stimulus in the first place?

If we the taxpayers (through our elected democratic government) elect to bailout AIG and Goldman-Sachs and General Motors, then we the taxpayers must take the money from somewhere else; and it was the Democrats (and some Repubs) who decided on those bailouts in the first place.

How stupid are Republicans not to clarify it?

We need the Tea Party or third party for straight talk.

No, just the press protecting their investment. All the conservative sites are just ridiculing the Won today over the pea and bandage comments. It is hard to believe that the press still can continue to protect him from himself...or that they would even want to try. It’s one thing to be the fool, but another to continually tell us he’s wearing clothes when we can plainly see otherwise, just shows us how dishonest the press has/is/will continue to be to protect their Won.

Here’s the way I see it:

If Obama caves, and only cuts spending, he loses his base and definitely loses re-election.

If Obama doesn’t cave, and the US default, he loses independents (again) and definitely loses re-election, as most people see this as a Presidential issue, ie, the President should play a constructive role and gets the rap for failure.

If Boehner caves, the GOP loses the House. And Obama very possibly wins re-election, because I don’t think independents want taxes raised at this time, either. (Not just tea party).

If Boehner doesn’t cave, then, if the US goes into default, Obama still loses re-election (See above).

I think that is pretty accurate as to where we are.

I don’t think Boehner will cave, then. There really is no up side for him to do so.

I think, personally, Obama’s goose is cooked politically here. He lost this battle when he lost the house last November.

Anyone see flaws in that logic?

I would agree, but you forgot that he’s black and as such as the media is concerned, he is responsible for nothing. Any displeasure over political apocolyptic hellishness brought to bare on us from Obama is really just racism spat from ruling white cronies stuck on Jeffersonian dogma from an era long dead.
