~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Happy Independence Day From Patriots Point, South Carolina!

Mount Pleasant is a suburban town in Charleston County, South Carolina, United States, within the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area.

At the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is Patriot's Point, a naval and maritime museum, home to the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which is now a museum ship. The Ravenel Bridge, an eight lane highway that was completed in 2006, spans the Cooper River and links Mount Pleasant with downtown Charleston.

The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in the summer of 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown appeared on the horizon of Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976.

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum would become one of the largest museums of its kind in the world with the addition of other Historic Landmark ships like the destroyer USS Laffey, known as “The Ship That Would Not Die”, the Balao class submarine Clamagore and the Treasury class Coast Guard cutter Ingham (the Ingham would later move to the Miami Dade Historical Maritime Museum in 2009).

Priceless war planes used during wars and conflicts spanning from WWII to Desert Storm are featured aboard the Yorktown's 40,000 square foot hangar bay and atop the 888 foot flight deck. Patriots Point is also the home of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and their official Medal of Honor Museum with tons of interactive exhibits.

Located landside is the only replica of a Vietnam Support Base in the country as well as a Cold War Submarine Memorial paying tribute to the sacrifices and triumphs made by the men and women during the Cold War.

I first became interested in the Laffey after watching a National Geographic Explorer special on her about 15-20 years ago. They were given a guided tour of the ship by her WW2 captain, Commander (retired as a Rear Admiral) Frederick Julian Becton (Navy Cross and 5 Silver Stars!), who has since passed away. They actually had some footage of the Laffey shortly after the attack and a newsreel of her triumphant return to the US.

If anyone is interested, Admiral Becton wrote an outstanding history of his ship, The Ship That Would Not Die. It is one of the best single ship histories I've ever read.

He Calls Me Friend
July 5, 2011

Someone has defined friendship as “knowing the heart of another and sharing one’s heart with another.” We share our hearts with those we trust, and trust those who care about us. We confide in our friends because we have confidence that they will use the information to help us, not harm us. They in turn confide in us for the same reason.

We often refer to Jesus as our friend because we know that He wants what is best for us. We confide in Him because we trust Him. But have you ever considered that Jesus confides in His people?

Jesus began calling His disciples friends rather than servants because He had entrusted them with everything He had heard from His Father (John 15:15). Jesus trusted the disciples to use the information for the good of His Father’s kingdom.

Although we know that Jesus is our friend, can we say that we are His friends? Do we listen to Him? Or do we only want Him to listen to us? Do we want to know what’s on His heart? Or do we only want to tell Him what’s on ours? To be a friend of Jesus, we need to listen to what He wants us to know and then use the information to bring others into friendship with Him.

Sweet thought! We have a Friend above,
Our weary, faltering steps to guide,
Who follows with His eye of love
The precious child for whom He died. —Anon.

Christ’s friendship calls for our faithfulness. So that our lives exalt His name. —D. De Haan

Nothing speaks more clearly of God’s love than the cross.

Read: John 15:9-17

All things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you . . . that you should go and bear fruit. —John 15:15-16

With all those hits, it was a testament to her crew that they brought her home.

I just checked the Kindle Store for my iPad, a new toy that is really nice for reading books. The book is not available yet, but I put in a note for the publisher. I will keep it on my list.

I heard more than saw fireworks in my area. Lots of “BOOM, BOOM.”

Hope you weren’t too tired having to wait till midnight. On New Year’s the fireworks could probably go all night long.

There were a couple really loud BOOMs about a half hour ago, but it’s been pretty quiet since then.

I’m trying to hold out til midnight. LOL!

Just heard the first firecracker sounds. I’m surprised I haven’t heard more of them.

I served 20 years in the Navy, 10 of them stationed aboard carriers (Nimitz, JFK, Ike). A few years ago on a business trip to Charleston, I toured the Yorktown. I was impressed to say the least. But it was the creepiest place I’ve ever been. Walking below decks (on a weekday afternoon wneh there were few tourists) there was no sound. No people, no crew, no machinery running. Just my own footsteps and the ghosts of the men who died on board.
