Thanks! I’m off to do a little reading . . My undergrad major was history with a concentration in military, but my areas were the American and English Civil Wars. . . .

Indian accounts say that the whole affair was over in the “time it takes a hungry man to eat his dinner ...”

A moment of clarity from Brad Pitt? That's refreshing...

“You shouldn't speak until you know what you're talking about. That's why I get uncomfortable with interviews. Reporters ask me what I feel China should do about Tibet. Who cares what I think China should do? They hand me a script. I'm a grown man who puts on makeup.”

Yup.

He also added one thing that no one ever heard of, the real reason why Star Trek was directed by JJ Abrams.

One Paramount exec was pissed off that someone was parked in his spot. It was James Cameron. When said exec told Cameron to get away from parking spot, Cameron said ‘DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM, I MADE AVATAR. I HAVE THE DIRECTOR OF THE NEW START TREK WITH ME MFER”.

He didn’t say “which” director was in Cameron’s Porsche. So he went next door to JJ Abram’s office so pissed, he said to Abrams “do you want to direct Star Trek?”. Abrams just said yes, politely.

Exec comes down, says to Cameron “go f*** yourself, we already have a director. And kindly get out of my parking spot before I call security, you arrogant SOB”.

Nice story over lunch..

My life-long interest in history (I’m going on 68) has centered around the Civil War and the American West. I still have drawings of Custer and others in my catechism and other books from my youth...

Although I’ve delved into WWII, those other areas of interest have always held sway. The link to ‘Friends’ will give you a good inclination of historical reading to get in to. There’s all kinds of new information that become available in the last couple decades. My favorite recent book is Michael Donahue’s “Drawing Battle Lines”, though it’s more restrictive on topic than other more broadly based books.

Contempt for Custer?

One of the greatest heroes of the Civil War?

Savior of Gettysburg in his first action as General?

A man who always led from the front?

The man who forced Lee’s surrender at appomatax on April 9th with his bold moves?

How on earth could you have contempt for such a man!

Good report.... I have walked the Adobe Walls site an tried to reproduce the shot Billy Dixon made there. A few authors of books on the battle an folks from the plains museam helped to set up what they suspected was fact.

The hollywood variants of history make hash of the facts.

I made the shot after about a dozen tries with adjusted point of aim.

I hope to get a chance to do what you did firsthand. Visit the little bighorn site..

No, they didn’t do anything else that I know of. They didn’t scalp him out of respect and he’d cut his hair pretty short.

You’re right, I do recall the awl piercing of the ears. But don’t recall the ‘arrow’ stuff. The ear piercing was done by squaws after the battle, and it’s likely the ‘arrow’ wound was done then as well. His only wounds from battle were the head and chest wounds.

They certainly had surprised the Indians that day.

If Benteen and the packs had moved up promptly, the attack from the north might have succeeded

I guess Stone must think that Lincoln was killed by “the feds” because Grant wanted his job.
After all, Lincoln was a republican as well.

Stone is mentally disturbed.

I must emphatically agree with your description of the area. Too many people don’t understand the real situation of the terrain and the land in this area.

We live in Sheridan, WY, about 70 miles south of the battlefield, and just north of the battlefield that was the opening chapter in what we locally call “Red Cloud’s War.”

First, people need to understand why the Indians were going to fight to the end for the ground between the Big Horn Mountains and the Black Hills. If you’re a subsistence hunter, this area is heaven on earth, even without the bison. With the bison, this area would be heaven, period, no discussion.

Second, as had been seen at the Fetterman Massacre, the Indians knew the terrain like the back of their hands, and more than that, the Indians knew how to use the grass to their advantage. The USA officers never could seem to get it through their heads that charging out into tall grass was like strolling into a modern fire-sack.

This year, there is so much rain and cool weather that the grass is already put over three feet deep. A little warmth and this native grass will be up to the chest of most of the average sized calvary soldier of that day.

For your saturday night entertainment...

I’d also tell you the “unofficial” story of how Jon Favreau made Iron Man look pro-US military and rightwing, (remember when the Middle east dude who helped Tony Stark in the cave lie dying on top of USAID rice sacks), well..there’s a story to that too from what he told me.;) And they say that conservatives are not involved in the biz hehe

To say Custer "screwed up" is simplistic (and I do not mean that offensively against your comment) but for Custer to have proceeded otherwise, would mean he would have had to anticipate the changed tactics of the Indians.

True, but that was certainly part of his job description.

My production buddy here in L.A. who works for Lionsgate said that Stone wanted the “holy trinity of Republicans” bashed before he dies...

He got Nixon, Bush but he really wanted Reagan. The top execs of the top studios said no to him multiple times about a Reagan film because even though they are all libs, they had great admiration for Reagan and respected him.

The Little Big Horn has overflowed its banks. It’s been an unusual year for sure in the region from what I can recall. The Phil Kearney site along with the battlefield sites of the Fetterman massacre and Wagon Box fights is another great piece of Western history. I’ve been over that area myself, and they’ve come along with developing the site of the fort since I’ve been there. I’d like to visit again sometime.

Also, between there and the Little Big Horn site, is the site of the Hayfield fight near the site where Ft C. F. Smith stood, one day apart from the Wagon Box fight near Phil Kearney. It’s harder to get to, but just as interesting. Interesting stuff...
