Alabama Passes Mandatory E-Verify & Immigration Enforcement Bill
Friday, June 3, 2011, 1:25 PM EDT
An Alabama House and Senate conference committee agreed on a new bill, which both chambers have already passed, that requires the use of E-Verify by all businesses in the state and includes several immigration enforcement provisions. Should Gov. Robert Bentley sign the bill into law, it would become one of the largest state crackdowns on illegal immigration in the country.
The bill requires all businesses, public and private, to begin using E-Verify effective April 1, 2012. Businesses that do not comply face suspension of its business license and loss of employee expensing for state income tax purposes. All state and local businesses must be in compliance by Jan. 1, 2012 or face loss of business license and contract.

But it's pretty weak. Correct any misunderstanding I have, but isn't it just the prohibition of sanctuary cities that's being proposed? I hope SOMETHING passes, but I can't see Texas doing what Alabama did anytime soon, not with their supermajorities in both houses capitulating to the Democrats so often. Inexcusable.
That is not the way E-Verify works. E-Verify is an electronic program through which employers verify the employment eligibility of their employees after hire. The program was authorized by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA). In short, employers submit information taken from a new hire's Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) through E-Verify to the Social Security Administration and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to determine whether the information matches government records and whether the new hire is authorized to work in the United States.
The employer just submits the new hire's SSN into the system and gets a response within seconds. If there are mismatches, then it is up to the new hire to resolve them within a specificed time frame. Only 1.7% of new hires receive mismatches. And of those 1.7% mismatches, 1.43% are not found work authorized. And of the 1.43%, 1.3 percent of employees who receive initial mismatches do not contest the mismatch.
The databases used to check E-Verify entries are already in existence. Americans don't have to get clearance from a government bureaucrat to work.
Yes, sanctuary cities ban.
I too, wish they would pass harsher measures.
Another reason I’m so happy I left Illinois for Alabama 2 years ago. Sign this bill quickly Governor Bentley!
I’ve noticed the same thing you have experienced, especially in the landscpaing business.
I hope your business picks up after this passes.
Keep us all posted on the developments and changes you see.
I don’t think you’re thinking things through.
Think long and hard about just exactly what those words really mean.
LOL. I have thought it through. 8 million illegal aliens holding jobs while 23 million Americans are looking for fulltime jobs. In addition to securing the border, we need to shut off the job magnet and track down and deport visa overstays, which make up more than 40% of the illegal alien population estimated to be 12 to 20 million.
It is illegal to hire someone who is illegally in this country and it is illegal for someone to work in this country who is not here legally and authorized to do so. That is the law. Either we abide by the Rule of Law or we do not.
Exactly. I have an I-9 on everyone who has ever worked with me since I incorporated in 1988. I check their identification and we both sign the form under penality of perjury. Everyone. Although, it's pretty easy to verify someone who walks into my office and says, "How you doin' this mornin' ma'am?"
Thank you. It's been a tough three-year struggle just keeping the doors open.
So, because the politicians in both parties have refused to secure the borders and enforce the law, you’re backing a program that will force every American to get permission from the government to work. Brilliant plan. /s
“Resorting” to what? All Alabama is doing is enforcing current illegal immigrant law. In other words its doing what the Fed govt is paid paid to do, should do, but refuses to do.
Yes it is against the law to hire illegals. Well sort of. Since illegals are not prosecuted for document fraud it’s kind of a joke.
Maybe it’s a good thing I don’t know.
BUT, as long as they can get welfare, medical care education and buy property it’s kind of stop gap isn’t it?
As a small business owner, I am exhausted by having to collect and report sales taxes, give a quarterly accounting for tax purposes, and an annual anal exam. I am sick of impact fees. I am sick of requirements to post this poster or that piece of paper. I am sick of permits. I am sick of having to perform proskynesis to the proxy’s of my neighbors, the politicians they hire to interfere with my way of life.
Let’s just bring back King George. I would rather have a tyrant on the other side of the Atlantic than have this Athenian style democracy where the tyrant lives next door and drives a minivan.
You must present identity documents to get a driver's license, cash a check, etc. There are 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in our midst. If the politicians in both parties have refused to secure our borders and enforce the law and suffered no political consequences, then I blame the people. They get the government they deserve.
Sort of? Illegals are not being prosecuted for a host of crimes beginning with entering this country illegally. Add to that ID theft, working illegally, tax evasion, etc. It is no joke when 8 million illegals are working while 23 million Americans are looking for fulltime employment.
BUT, as long as they can get welfare, medical care education and buy property its kind of stop gap isnt it?
They can't get those benefits legally except for ER care and K-12 education, both the results of SOTUS decisions. Of course, the 300,000 to 400,000 anchor babies born each year (one out of ever 10 births in the US) are entitled to all the benefits and entitlements of US citizens whether it is food stamps, Medicaid, or the right to vote once they reach 18. They are US citizens thru birthright citizenship.

Get informed, involved, and engaged in the political process thru political parties, the Tea Party, or other movements to change the political climate and culture. The Left has done that for decades, which is why we have the current system. You can either stand on the side of liberty or tyranny. If you choose tyranny, then stop complaining.
Those of us who have actually thought this through always knew that was a great camel's nose in the tent. Seems to be working quite well, as intended, to gradually make it mandatory.
It is indeed a powerful tool. It is also a POWER not enumerated in the Constitution. Power can be misused. What EV is telling you is that instituting the POWER is a dangerous thing. There are better ways to get rid of illegals that are proven to work.
Bounty systems can be so effective they were used to eradicate passenger pigeons to the point of extinction. All that would have to be done is to put a $5,000 bounty on an illegal turned in and deported with a $25,000 penalty on legal immigrants or citizens illegally detained. I promise you, in this job market they would be gone so fast it would scare you.
No, we do not need and should not institute E-Verify. A tool that can be misused to control employment is a very dangerous POWER to put in the hands of the Federal government.
Thank you. It's been a tough three-year struggle just keeping the doors open.
I am involved. I am informed. I am also like Custer at Little Bighorn.
Trying to bring back the concepts of national sovereignty, freedom, liberty is like pushing string through a pipe. Herding cats.
To sell a new form of tyranny, all a politician has to do is invoke safety or children and stupid villagers will cut off there own arms and eat them to end hunger.
The Constitution, it’s enumerated powers was set up to limit the damage caused by the ignorant feckless public and the purposeful exploitative politicians. But since we don’t use that document anymore we are screwed. screwed by apathy. Screwed by people who want to harness the full power and force of government to make sure that safety is mandated. So “Safety, and Justice for All” is the new model for this dying and feckless vapor of it’s former greatness.
‘not ENFORCING THE LAW’ should be grounds for impeachment
especially when it comes to security.
No they would rather fondle little kids and women.
