WASHINGTON House Republicans have engineered the defeat of their own proposed $2.4 trillion increase in the debt limit, a political gambit designed to reinforce a demand for spending cuts to accompany any future increase in government borrowing.
The vote Tuesday was 97-318, far below the two-thirds majority needed for passage.

Awesome. It's a gambit! ... a risky scheme ... a ploy. Gotta love AP, the propaganda wing of the democrat party.

Republicans signaled well in advance that the debt limit vote was political theater and did not portend a final refusal to grant an increase.Caving before having to cave?

The Democrats were the ones demanding a clean vote on raising the debt ceiling. The Reps gave them what they wanted. Interesting how many voted with the Reps.

The clear message sent by the House vote is that the debt ceiling will not be raised without cuts in spending and other structural budget changes. The Dems wanted a clean vote on raising the debt ceiling.
A month or so ago, 114 of them signed a letter to Boehner demanding that the vote be taken without being linked to anything else. They got their wish. It looks like over 80 Dems voted with the Reps.

So if there is a Financial Doomsday, as many democrats and liberal financial wags were saying, they can’t pin it on the Republicans.

We need the voting record to see if the progressive caucus voted on mass for it.
To: muleskinner
Not really. The vote was about raising the debt ceiling without any conditions. It was defeated with all of the Reps and half of the Dems voting against it.

Hopefully the President gets the message. We’ll go ahead and raise the debt ceiling by one trillion dollars. But let us cut 500 billion dollars for the upcoming fiscal year.

Whoo-hoo! And the WH and the press were saying the GOP wouldn’t dare to do this...the heck with them!

It's a gambit! ... a risky scheme ... a ploy. Gotta love AP, the propaganda wing of the democrat party. No, AP. It's a win-win situation for conservatives. For the vascillating GOP leadership who say that they must have concessions before raising the debt ceiling, I say that they get those concessions (plus much much more) if they refuse to raise the debt ceiling at all. Refusal to raise the debt ceiling will result in an automatic $1.6 trillion reduction in the federal budget, and there is no way in hell Republicans could ever get that by negotiating with Democrats.
