As Government Bans Regular Light Bulbs, LED Replacements Will Cost $50 Each

NEW YORK – Two leading makers of lighting products are showcasing LED bulbs that are bright enough to replace energy-guzzling 100-watt light bulbs set to disappear from stores in January.

Their demonstrations at the LightFair trade show in Philadelphia this week mean that brighter LED bulbs will likely go on sale next year, but after a government ban takes effect.

The new bulbs will also be expensive — about $50 each — so the development may not prevent consumers from hoarding traditional bulbs.

Jerry Doyle was talking about this on the radio yesterday. Totally insane.

I’ll be buying 100-watt incandescent bulbs at the hardware store today, if they have any.

A whole lot of people are going to be sitting in the dark.

We have families who claim they cannot afford to pack a sandwich for their child to take to school. We have many families who live paycheck to paycheck. A $50 lightbulb?? Many people will just do without.

We are a third world country.

why don’t they use the 100 watt equivalent cfls (26 watt) which cost like $3? Yes, cfls make terrible light, but no one is going to spend $50 on a LED replacement for a 100W bulb. They’ll be buying the $3 CFL.

It’s being presented as either you spend $50 a piece on LED replacements or you hoard 100W incands.

$3 CFL - 100 Watt equivalent - 26 Watts actual. That’s what most people will buy, not the $50 LED - 100 Watt equivalent - 10-15 watts actual.

CFLs contain mercury and will be declared illegal shortly.

Well then, it's a no-brainer, isn't it?

you think? I’m not a big fan of cfls, but they do put out a lot of light per watt, and they’re cheap.

Off topic, but do you believe there is actually any family who could not reduce some expenditure ... cigarettes, for example, or beer, or cable, or the electricity to run the big-screen tv ... and buy lunch supplies for their children?

I don’t have to do either. I can just buy $3 CFLs whenever I need one. And there isn’t a crisis. I do believe that the Federal Government should not be helping me shop for light bulbs.

Many people will just do without.

That's what the elitists intend. Make everyday "luxuries" like lightbulbs so expensive that the average person just does without. This makes the elitist that much more special when they can afford those "luxuries" that used to be commonplace.

Oh, I agree with you. But the essence of what makes someone "poor" -- in almost all cases -- is a an ability to consistently make bad choices. Dropping out of school, having children out of wedlock, drinking too much, punching the boss, etc.

Could these people cut back on cigarettes in order to feed their children? They sure could. But they (apparently) don't. And will they buy fewer lottery tickets so that they can afford lightbulbs? Naaaaah ... they want to be millionaires.

The ultimate goal of socialism is to have two classes of people - a small, extremely rich ruling class, and a large, impoverished class of peasants to do their bidding.

Find out who controls the supply of mercury in this country and trace their political contributions, and you will discover the source of this scam.

Well that’s the point. People will begin by hoarding the 100W incands, switching to the CFL’s when the supply runs out (or up until January). There’s no way anyone in their right mind will pay $50 for a light bulb. And the manufacturers will quickly find there’s no market and the price will drop quickly. But, by then, it’ll be a product with a reputation.

The government can dictate all it wants. But that doesn’t mean the people will comply.

Excellent summary.

From another angle ... do people who don't read, sew, or do crossword puzzles, who are out in the bars or the street at night, and who have the tv on 24/7 even use light bulbs?

Its already been done, GE pushed for the ban. GE makes the CFLs of course.

Manufacturing has nothing to do with the souce of raw materials. Someone stands to make tons of money on the sale of mercury, and money is the only thing that would have convinced Congress to force this potential hazard into our homes.

GE was also one of the largest manufacturers of standard incandescent light bulbs in the world. They're now going to have to close their standard light bulb manufacturing facilities, or completely retrofit those factories to make CFLs and LED bulbs.

I don't get the upside of this for them.
