Oregon teen stabs himself to death on stage during open mic night
Published: Monday, April 18, 2011
BEND, Ore. -- Open mic night ended in tragedy as 19-year-old Kipp Rusty Walker took his own life Thursday night at a coffee house.
While the scene shocked patrons, one of Walkers friends, who did not want to be named, told a local television station he saw it coming.
"I've been preparing for it for a while. I'm sad about it, but I think I'm in shock -- it's like a whirlwind of emotions," Walker's friend told KZTV.
Walker was playing the keyboard for a crowd of nearly 15 people at Strictly Organic Coffee Company on Bond Street when his performance took a tragic turn.
Strictly Organic's co-owner, Rhonda Ealy, told the news station she was not at the coffee house's open mic night but her staff re-counted what happened.
"It was really unclear at first what was even happening," Ealy said. "You know it is an open mic and it's a performance, people at first thought it was some sort of theater."
Patrons said Walker, who would have turned 20 in a week, stood up, said nothing -- then began stabbing himself in his chest, over and over.
wouldn't it have been easier to just say "14 people"?
If I could stick a knife in my heart
Suicide right on stage
Would it be enough for your teenage lust
Would it help to ease the pain? Ease your brain?
I found that line rather odd myself.
Nearly 15 people might constitute a crowd if you are in a phone booth, or the rest room of a fast food joint, but not really anywhere else.
Kid should have laid off the coffee.
Definitely in the running for the 2011 Darwin Awards!
I know it’s only rock ‘n’ roll but I like it
It appears the kid could have used better friends, being as how this one "saw it coming" but did nothing.
This has GOT to be about one of the CRAPPIEST Generation Millenium type phrases I have heard in a long time. I hope it does not reflect the shape of things to come in our world. This kind of reminds me of Kitty Genovese. All kinds of opportunities to stop it, but nobody does a damned thing.
Just more ‘art’ funded by the NEA. We morons are simply too dumb to understand it. *SNORT*
Maybe there were 15 until the kid killed himself?
LOL! Ghoulishly humorous! :)
Ooh fah. I have teenage kids and I’ve been forced to go to these things as chair meat to boost the crowd for their friends. It really is a pathetic scene for these kids obsessed with performing. At least when I was a kid we’d go down the basement and rock it out.
Apparently no one ever told him the old line about ‘break a leg’ on opening night. If they had, maybe he’d still be alive.
Prayers for the young mans soul and for comfort and strength for his family and friends.
Treadwell is the personification of loony liberalism.
I know this sounds insensitive but I fell off the couch laughing hysterically when the documentary ended with him being eaten by Sugar Snaps bear.
Like the GOP and our economic collapse.
