GOP Leadership to Freshman: We'll Stop Paying You if You Shut Down the Government
Big Government ^ | April 1, 2011 | Mike Flynn

The Kabuki theater that is the debate over the federal budget took a weird turn this afternoon. The GOP-led House of Representatives passed HR 1255, the “Government Shutdown Prevention Act.” The measure is largely symbolic…it states that if the Democrat-led Senate and President Obama don’t act on $61 billion in cuts passed earlier this year by the House, those cuts would be ‘law of the land.’ Which, obviously, doesn’t hold any water. This isn’t too far away from when Democrats proposed “deeming” ObamaCare passed.

The House GOP Leadership, however, did add something to their legislation that should give pause to all conservatives. They grafted onto their bill a Democrat proposal to suspend pay for members of Congress if there is a government shutdown. So, if members believe that the budget cuts “negotiated” by GOP Leadership are too small or think we should finally face up to the inevitable tough choices, they potentially could lose their pay.

I think Rep. McCotter summed it up best:

The 2010 midterms are going to look like a ripple in a puddle when 2012 rolls around. This is NOT what the people voted for.

Well, I'm sure most congresscritters, maybe not all, but most are financially secure enough that missing a paycheck or two isn't going to send them to the poor house.

This should be *embraced*. This would, IMO, immutably prove that those who voted to cut the funds that triggered their own loss of pay are more interested in the status of the country than they are their own welfare. It also shows the extreme pettiness of whomever is proposing it. And I don’t give a crap WHOM is proposing it.

This would be great theater. Shut the sucka down.

Any proposed budget cuts are a farce so long as they don't include abolishing all federal agencies that do not comply with any of the enumerated powers in Article 1 Section 8 of the Constitution as these are powers reserved to the states or to the people per the 10th Amendment.

There are no enumerated powers to regulate the environment, communications, education, food, drugs, agriculture, health, alcohol, tobacco and firearms just to name a few. Therefore the EPA, FCC, Department of Education, FDA, Department of Agriculture, DHHS and BATFE are all Unconstitutional, along with other agencies not named, and must be abolished.

Doing so will restore the federal government to the limited government principles the founding fathers instilled in the Constitution and drastically reduce federal spending thereby balancing the budget. The federal spending problem will never be resolved until we comply with the Constitution.

And what the hell is rong about cancelling the paychecks for Congress in the event of a government shutdown?

One would think the freshmen would be fully in favor of this.

If there is to be "sacrifice", it should legitimately start with Congress.

Well, I'm actually fine with this, as long as it applies to every Congresspuke equally. IOW, don't be telling me that Michele Bachmann doesn't get paid when John I'm-in-Tears Boehner does.

These GOP "leaders" are even crappier than I once thought. They would rather kill us than defend us, as long as the Democommies are happy. Eff'em all.

They are condescending to the freshman. They aren't your unruly children Mr. Speaker.

I think I can count on my congressman to do the right thing. He has proposed strict accounting of expenses and returning anything left over to helping to pay down the debt.

I don't know about the new House members, But I believe I read that all senators are multimillionaires and won't miss a few pay checks.

That is one of the reasons I highly favor returning to the original Constitution and electing senators by vote of State legislatures.

My freshman Representative voted (and spoke in favor) of cutting off pay to CONgress and the President in the event of a shutdown.

Hey - if the military’s pay gets cut off in a shutdown (it does, according to my Rep.), then legislators and the POTUS should also be shut down.

Name ONE SINGLE Rep or Senator who lives paycheck to paycheck... Such a shutdown won’t hurt them.

If there is a way for the GOP leadership to look like phonies they always find it. The truth is that 63 billion in cuts is like a fat man giving up a very small piece of one french fry and calling it a diet. The GOP needs to take it to the people. Poll after poll shows most citizens know that spending cuts are needed. They know this because they have had to make cuts themselves when they were overextended and that there isn’t a magic money fairy. The GOP should make clear the contrast that they are doing the responsible hard thing. The piecemeal approach makes them look like phonies. The Democrats get to make cutting 63 billion look like a hand-wringing sacrifice and the GOP gets to simultaneously look like fools that don’t comprehend the meaning of a budget cut.

There is no middle-way with this stuff. People didn’t send the Democrats packing in order to get micro-spending cuts.
So what the govt shuts down. Cantor and Boehner need to get a spine and get their story straight. I didn’t think keeping Boehner as the House speaker was a good idea and it becomes clearer day by day that he is not up to the job. He and Cantor seem to be stuck on the idea of getting Democrats to compromise through niceties. It isn’t going to happen. So better to start the attack now and dig in to win the war than to look like you don’t know who the enemy is.

This isn’t a game. The future of this country is at stake and the house is burning done they are rushing forward with thimbles full of water.

Behold a true patriot whose definitely not like the other eunuchs in DC. Boehner should do his country a favor and step down and let a real man handle the job, IMO.
