White House considering emergency economic stimuli

By: Glenn Thrush September 2, 2010 07:04 PM EDT

The Obama administration is mulling a raft of emergency fixes to stimulate the economy before the midterms, including an extension of the research and development tax credit and new infrastructure spending, according to several people familiar with the situation.

Administration officials have been huddling almost continuously during the past week, brainstorming for ideas that would boost employment without hiking the massive federal deficit – with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner rushing to the West Wing for further consultations late Thursday.

The White House press office on Thursday refused to say how much a financial package might be, other than to say it won’t be a “second stimulus.” But the administration will have a tough time selling nearly any package to terrified, Obama-phobic Hill Democrats who increasingly blame the president – and his ambitious, expensive legislative agenda – for their dismal prospects this November.

The meetings, which had Obama huddling with his economic advisers twice in the last seven days, have yielded no specific proposals. But he’s given the team a priority: find ways to pay for as many of the ideas, mostly tax breaks, as possible without a deficit increase, an administration official told POLITICO.

The R-and-D tax cut, which Congressional Democrats have already considered would, for example, be paid for by closing overseas corporate loopholes.

"Quick - where's the KY jelly?"

What's this Kentucky jelly I hear so much about? Is it something specific to the region? Do you enjoy it on bread w/ peanut butter?

j/k

ONly about 50% of the money from original Stimulus has been spent.

No more money, this is insane.

Emergency? Emergency?

He spends all f***ing summer golfing and pretending he's Louis XVI, and now it's a f***ing emergency?

The emergency is that his party is about to be tossed onto the ash-heap of history.

If the Republicans who are up on the Hill, who are up for reelection, dont stand up to this, they ought to all be thrown out on their asses, too. RINOS who would countenance and support this insanity would be worse than Lib Dems in my book.

Agreed. We got where we are by years of electing 'the lessor of two evils'. Guess what the lessor of 2 evils is still evil, in the case of Rhinos evil pr3etending to be good.

It’s too late. All too late for him and his cohorts. Democrats are always together in solidarity (if you’ll forgive the irony in using that term), but you know you’ve messed up spectacularly if your own cabinet is resigning like mad.

“Going on tv and resigning might work better........”

At this point, it’s the only way to save his skin from impeachement. Then the Congress can have Biden who will sit pretty and do as he’s told, with the threat of Hillary if he doesn’t do what he’s told to somehow work to salvage the economy.

These people actually believe in their superiority and the correctness of their policies. They truly believe that if the government spends more money, everything will get better, not realizing that, by taking money from the private sector, the real creator of jobs, they are, in fact, depriving the engine of the economy of its fuel. Insane? Maybe, but if they actually took the time to objectively and scientifically review the results of their policies, they would see how stupid they, themselves, really are..........Romer hinted at it, but apparently she is too “eat up” with liberalism to actually see it for herself....................

......Going on tv and resigning might work better......

Something like that is happening today. The market is up. The news of the morning was an increase in the unemployment rate to 9.6%

That should be bad news but it can be argued that an increase in unemployment is good news.

Taken with the Sabato revelation about strong or very strong Republican gains, a rise in unemployment is seen as strengthening the Republican chances. What was reported as bad by the markets a few weeks ago is now perceived as good.

Earlier this morning Obama was touting along with his economic team how they have broken the back of the Recession.

Many would contend that Obama and his economic team has broken the back of Americans and America and is now trying to bury both.

If they gave me 5 grand, I would spend it on guns, ammo and canned food because when the collapse happens, you would want to be prepared.

May I just say, "What a dumb f*ck!".

Er, let me think back. I was in the Navy during the mid '70's (Carter) and my wife and two kids lived check to check. Then Ronald Reagan gave the military an 11% pay increase and we started to save.

From there out, we stopped having to live on Spagettios and buy model airplanes for entertainment. We went through the early '80's recession because we had saved, we were okay. During that recession, the Fedgov continued to spend, we didn't. We learned how to balance our checkbook while reducing our credit card debt!

Even though we got an increase in pay and the Fedgov increased spending even under RR, we got ahead because we stopped over-extending ourselves.

So some liberal, please tell me if we had continued to spend beyond our ability to pay, and then borrow more to pay for the aforementioned debt, how in the world would we have ever not gone bankrupt? Some whiny "gimme" socialist tell me how that works?

Yeah, I know. The Fedgov can PRINT money and sell bonds to China. You frigging socialist idiots are fools. Those debts will come due, you ignorant f*cks! You dumbasses are hanging your hopes on the economy turning around and bringing in more tax receipts. You utopians always hang your hopes on the future, rather that the reality of the day.

I truly believe you all are genuinely over-educated idiots. You have NO, ZERO, NADA commonsense. You just can't see past your own "we-are-the-world" feelings, can you?

All you at Dummies Underground and everyone who also hangs their heart on their sleeve are just to damn stupid to exist. Use to be, you would be kicked out of the tribe to go off and die (no, not the stupid TV show). Now, you're revered as having some convoluted, parsed, spun academic insight to humanity. Still dumbshits, all.

How many more trillions of dollars is he going to print up to keep the “appearance” of an upswing? Isn’t this the way idiotic liberals always screw things up even more? After all they’ve seen in their lives you’d think some of them MIGHT realize that throwing money at a problem isn’t going to fix things - especially if you have to go into even MORE debt to TRY to stay afloat. The government can’t keep “borrowing” from John Q. Public (and his children and grand-children) to “pay” for grand schemes that, again, only give the temporary APPEARANCE of helping...

But, I suppose this should be expected... It’s not like Obama really wants the economy to succeed, and if we fall - well, he’d probably be thrilled about it. He’d probably be dancing just like those on the “Muslim streets” after 9/11.

I sure hope the incumbents in the GOP who haven’t been thrown out already realize that this “new” TARP-like plan will get them sacked in November if they support it. If they want to keep their seats I’d say they’d better really step up their game in fighting against this. The American public is broke, and you can’t get blood from a stone. It’s time to stand up and refuse to follow any more insane economic ‘plans’ put forward by a man who could care less if “capitalism” fails.

including an extension of the research and development tax credit and new infrastructure spending..

Research money for embryonic stem cell research and building roads to nowhere will really help small businesses on main street. These people do not have a clue.
