Free speech? Obama song gets coach fired

America... the land of the free and the home of the brave. At least that's what we hear when we sing the National Anthem.

Wait... are we still allowed to sing that song and express our patriotism? I know we are still the home of the brave, but it's become clearer that we are no longer the land of the free. Just ask "former" middle school football coach Bryan Glover, who wrote a song about Barack Obama and sent it to people on his e-mail list. Where did this expression of free speech land him?

The unemployment line, that's where.

As reported by OneNewsNow.com, Glover, a 26-year-old Christian, co-wrote the song "When You're Holding a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail." The song "takes a dig at the current administration and what he believes to be the wrong moves for the U.S." According to the report, Glover sent the song to everyone in his personal e-mail list, "which included parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football."

That's when the trouble began. Within 90 minutes of sending out the song, Glover heard from his head coach that parents were asking that Glover be fired.

"When the coach first called me, he said his phone was blown up with parents saying that I was being politically incorrect -- quote, unquote -- if you will, and that some of them were even reading into racial overtones in the song," Glover explains.

Listen to the song for yourself and see if there is ANY reference to race in it at all. Why do people have to knee-jerk and claim racism just because someone doesn't like Obama? It's because they are so enamored with him and his socialist programs that they think anyone who doesn't like him must be a racist.

One of those “stupid” white guys on every TV commercial. Those commercials they have in between the NFL fawning and drooling over Imam Obama.

Watching TV just supports the regime.

A while back there was a big dust-up in city government when an employee accidentally hit SEND TO ALL on an email with the photoshop of the obamamobile.

Media picked up on it, employee apologized and that was that, no other repercussions.

No, the teacher does not have a right to do these things and not be fired. They are either contract employees or union employees. They can be fired by having their contracts terminated or via union proceses.

“What we have now is categories of protected speech and banned speech. If you curse whitey or rail against homophobia you cannot be fired.”

Picture a coupla white boys getting off scot free after standing outside a polling place in Watts calling people names and threatening them.

Franklin, Tennessee???????

The article studiously avoids mentioning city and state.

It’s not about being offended. Despite all logic, some people still like Obama and would find that song contreversial. It’s about the school not wanting their teachers sending out any kind of material that can be considered contreversial.

he sends a link the song to everyone in his "personal e-mail list." Thus, he wasn't taking class time or practice time to tell students about his political views. He was on his on time, with his own computer, sending to his own list.

Your "personal e-mail list" should be limited to your "personal friends".

His was not.

His "personal e-mail list", included "parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football."

If you send your political opinions to your personal friends on your "personal e-mail list": No problem.

If you send your political opinions to a list of your employer's clients that you copied and pasted into your personal friends on your "personal e-mail list": Big problem.

Free speech is between you and the government. It is not - or at least it should not be - between you and your employer.

Agreed. A lot of people don't understand this. I used to be an Admin Moderator on a forum and members would always yell "freedom of speech" if I edited or deleted content. "Not on my website" would be my reply. Even had several lawsuits threatened.

"Now just using the wrong word can get you fired or end your career."

Yep, just ask Dr. Laura and Senator George Allen.

The only question I’d have is how the e-mail addies for the kids he coached got on his personal e-mail. If it was because he’s friends with them, then this is none of the school’s business. If he had their e-mails because of his coaching job then they may have a point.

Think about it this way: If he had written that ditty about W., sent it out to parents, it became a national story...would the people of FR be defending him as they are now because it’s about Obama? I think we both know the answer to that and that’s my point. We have to hold ourselves to the same standard to which we’d hold the libs.

If he had been playing or singing his song to students on school time then yeah I can see him being fired. But he sent an email from his home account. Sorry but that isn't even close to a firing offense unless he had attached kiddie porn or the like.

Yeah, because schools are so neutral when it comes to politics...good grief...

I’ve moderated a few boards as well and I almost never, ever, edited or deleted posts. The only time I’d do it is if it contained stuff that could get the board removed / suspended / in legal trouble.

What would be the response if he sent out a message praising Obama? Probably, there would be objections from worried parents with concerns about his indoctrinating their children.

Would he be fired? Likely not.

Stupidity isn’t a crime and neither is free speech.

This guy exercised poor judgement at most.

The taxpayers of that school district are going to pay heavily for the school overstepping their jurisdiction/authority.

And the leap in logic to assume that many here would demand he be fired for doing the same about God or W., is absurd. Many here are TRUE conservatives and know that free speech goes both ways, even if we vehemently disagree with the message.

The issue here is that this fella did this on his own time, with his own computer, to his personal email list. It’s a private matter and the school had absolutely no business involving itself.

I hope they lose their “collective” ass in this matter. Because they’re behaving like the communists that they are.

I’m all for going after the schools for taking political sides either way. But we should not take the same route as the left. The only answer that will work will be to get the politics out of schools in the first place.

I know that’s pretty pie in the sky but the other two options are to keep doing what we’re doing or to have to accept activist teachers openly espousing their view. Neither of those options works.
