Iconic John Wayne Role Redone (True Grit remake)

In 1969, John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" -- a grizzled, drunken U.S. Marshal hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her father's killer. The role ended up winning the aging Western star his first and only Oscar, prompting him to make a rare sequel -- "Rooster Cogburn" -- opposite Katherine Hepburn in 1975. The image of Wayne's craggy, eye-patched visage from "True Grit" has become a cinematic icon.

So film mavens everywhere were taken aback when it was announced last year that Joel and Ethan Coen would been making their own version of "True Grit." But don't expect a straight remake; this movie is based more closely on the Charles Portis novel. And Jeff Bridges, fresh off his Oscar win, was tapped to play Cogburn; that's right, the Duke has been replaced by the Dude.

Took a trip this summer to SW Colorado where True Grit was filmed. Ate at the True Grit Cafe in Ridgeway. The cafe is across the street where they had the hanging scene. Also got to see the old house that was used for Mattie Ross home and the cemetery supposedly where her father was buried.

I knew Damon was a dumbass. But he's NEVER SEEN TRUE GRIT? Now I know he's...um...well, let's just say that there is no doubt in my mind that he throws like a girl.

On the other hand, I have yet to see a Coen Brothers movie that was lousy. Sounds like a wait-for-cable experience.

I hate remakes of good movies.

But I really admire the Coen brothers. So, maybe this will be worth watching, not as a replacement for True Grit, but to stand alongside it.

LOL!

I must say, the Audrey Hepburn made my heart skip a beat, man, was she cute. But I must say, Julia Ormond is an extremely attractive woman. I know many people hated “The English Patient”, but I really enjoyed it.

For the record, I did like the remake of “Sabrina”, almost against my will.

Complicated was a good 90 minute storysqueezed into two-and-a-half hours.

Nevertheless, it was very funny.

LOL, I watched ‘It’s Complicated” with my wife (it was her turn to pick it out, my turn to watch) but I did the husbandly duties.

I deplore and detest Arrec Bahlwin. But I must say, he fit that role so well I just couldn’t help but laugh.

The movie did irritate me to no end, though. At one point, I just blurted out “WTF is wrong with these people? All they do is see shrinks, fornicate, eat and talk about everyone else!”

You just wanted to grab all the characters by the shoulders and give them a stiff slap across the face...

Nolte ruined his career, Gibson I think has as well.

‘I have to rank The Searchers up there also.’

Can you imagine what PC Hollywood would do to ‘The Searchers’?

Yep, the John Ford films were outstanding, as was The Searchers.

I’ve always had a soft spot for The Shootist because it always seemed to me it was Wayne’s way of saying goodbye to his fans, and was such a deeply personal performance. I also like how he brought in some guys from the old days for one last hurrah - Richard Boone, John Carradine, etc.

I had no idea who they were when I saw ‘Blood Simple” and I remember saying “Now THAT was interesting...”

I have to agree with you. I am a huge fan of the Coen Brothers. Miller's Crossing is among the best films made and is much overlooked.

The Coen's movies, even those that are not great, ‘Hudsucker Proxy’ comes to mind, are so incredibly beautiful to look at. They are simply stunning in their camera work and sets.

The novel is significantly different from the Wayne version of the film, which is good, but is primarily a character driven piece that is absolutely a mediocre film without Wayne. Darby is OK, but Campbell couldn't act a lick and besides Dennis Hopper, the heavies in the film are barely passable actors.

I look forward to seeing how the Coen's recreate this film in their image. It should be fun, and if they make it different enough from the original it should stand on it's own. As far as lefties are concerned, if I only watched films done by Conservatives, I would see very few films, and I truly like a good film. Most actors and artists are leftists. They are emotionally driven, therefore they have no rational. This is why for centuries they where on the same social level as vagrants and prostitutes. It is only very recently in history that any body would consider their opinions on anything.

I’m just really surprised that they didn’t have a black actor take on the Duke’s role....that has been the trend lately....Wild, Wild West....Walking Tall, etc.

I guess I lived in California too long, they seemed normal to me, think that is why I thought it was so funny. Also I’m of that generation...... and like you I detest Alec Baldwin, but no one was more perfect for that role than him.

You’re right WKU man...TRUE GRIT is a great film and a real great example of Americana. Even the handsome singer Glen Campbell was good as was his rendition of the title tune.

It wasn’t a perfect film. They should have loaded that Sharps rifle with a full 90 grains of FF powder so that it would shoot like “too much gun” instead of the anemic blank they used. Parts of the screen play and the direction messed up some of Kim’s role but she was super in most of the film.

It was John Wayne’s iconic role played just ever so.

Yep. Loved ‘The Shootist’, and “The Searcher” was a departure for me...he definitely wasn’t going for a standard John Wayne part there.

"I’ve always had a soft spot for The Shootist"

It always reminded me of a tamer version of The Wild Bunch. Same themes in both.
