An Unhappy Day At The Washington Post

But also sort of a happy day at The Washington Post, for the dwindling band of writers and editors there who value such old-fashioned traits as temperance in the expression of personal views; forthrightness; and fairness.

The liberal blogger Dave Weigel, who was hired by The Post to cover the conservative movement, has resigned, after advising Matt Drudge on a semi-public forum for leftish commentators to set himself on fire. Put aside the controversy over whether the Post, which was advised by its star blogger, Ezra Klein (who once advised parties unknown, via his Twitter account, to "f*ck tim russert. f*ck him with a spiky acid-tipped dick") that Weigel would do an excellent and balanced job of reporting on conservatives, even understood that it was hiring a liberal, and not a conservative (Ben Smith has more on this aspect of the controversy), the issue in the newsroom today is, How did the Post come to this?

"How could we destroy our standards by hiring a guy stupid enough to write about people that way in a public forum?" one of my friends at the Post asked me when we spoke earlier today. "I'm not suggesting that many people on the paper don't lean left, but there's leaning left, and then there's behaving like an idiot."

I gave my friend the answer he already knew: The sad truth is that the Washington Post, in its general desperation for page views, now hires people who came up in journalism without much adult supervision, and without the proper amount of toilet-training. This little episode today is proof of this. But it is also proof that some people at the Post (where I worked, briefly, 20 years ago) still know the difference between acceptable behavior

You can't destroy standards that don't exist. I know a guy who works for the Wash Post and openly admits that the "newspaper" is a joke. He's only there for the paycheck.

Oh, a duel eh? Well suh, I demand satisfaction!

So did Al Gore.

Not that I'd ever *dream* of calling you a sex-crazed poodle.

You're definitely more of an Irish Setter... :-)

Cheers!

To quote Weigel:

“HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH.”
“Deep breath.”
“HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHHAHAHA.”

Good riddance to a sack of crap.

it always cracks me up that the left hates drudge when all he does is post links to other news articles usually in liberal newspapers

I guess that the "enlightened" on the left don't like it when people like Drudge "enlighten" the general public about the hypocrisy of the left ...

Ben Smith: "There's a broader debate in journalism right now over whether reporters should strive for neutrality at all, or whether they should bring their own views and experiences into their writing...most of us at POLITICO, are the former. I'm on Journolist(sic), Klein's off-record listserv; I also get in on private conservative conversations (when they'll have me.)"

Why does such a great (self-described) neutral reporter have no problem getting on liberal sites but only get on conservative sites "when they'll have me"? Methinks your liberalism is showing, Mr. Smith.

Okay, dueling accepted:

I hate newspapermen. They come into camp and pick up their camp rumors and print them as facts. I regard them as spies, which, in truth, they are.

If I had my choice I would hang every reporter in the world, but I am sure we would be getting reports from Hell before breakfast.

I don’t know Weigel or really care about him. Ezra Klein is a total schmuck, just like Joe Klein at Newsweek or Time or whatever.

The issue missed here is that someone “leaked” some semi-private emails and posted them on the internet. That’s why the WaPo Leftists went beserk. However, when Walter Pincus, or Dana Priest or some other “investigative reporter” of the WaPo, or the NY Times, leaks classified military plans and assessments, it is called “ investigate journalism” worthy of a Pulitzer Prize.

Can’t have it both ways, folks, but then again, the Left has always had two or three standards they work by - No Standards, Double Standards, Double Secret Probation Standards.

Looks like someone’s ox got GORED on this Weigle thingy, jut as Fat Al’s sacred ox got GORED re the global warming hoax.

I think this is called “Payback”, baby.

I moved to DC in January, and started a subscription with the Washington Post. I just wanted something to read on the way to work each morning. It took about five days to determine that the Post was a joke. I will admit that the local news and the Metro updates are still worthy....but the entire front twelve pages are worthless.

I sent an email to the ombudsman about six weeks into my subscription...that I considered the Post fairly unbalanced. He did respond...saying that liberals consider the Post to be too far to the right in terms of balance (I kinda laughed...I wouldn’t consider them liberals anymore).

Finally, only an observation but from the local ABC, NBC, and CBS stations in DC...they are far more left than the Post and tilted almost on a nightly basis. If you are eighteen and naive...getting this dosage per day....you really can’t help but get doped up on “stupid news” coverage.

I was stationed here in DC 18 years ago and stayed after retirement. Depending where you live you may still be able to get a paper copy of the Washington Times. They have upped the number of AP articles but the other part of their content is pretty darned good.

With the infighting of the Moon family the Times may be gone soon. Too bad.
