SEATTLE -- Seattle police are investigating what they call an assault of an officer in South Seattle. However, a police officer is seen punching a 17-year-old girl in the face during the incident captured by a video camera on Monday.

According to Seattle police, the incident began when an officer spotted a man jaywalking in the 3100 block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way S. at approximately 3:10 p.m. The man was some 15 feet away from a pedestrian overpass, police said.

She was Black, and convinced that any type of action taken against her or her friend had to be racist. “You have to stand up to the man honey!!!” I honestly see this as a young woman trained to object to authority.

Then you’ve got the black guy with the camera shooting his mouth off.

I’m not necessarily in favor of striking a woman like this. The problem is, officers are human too and sometimes they react out of frustration too.

Unless an officer is clearly out of control, doing something totally against the law and endangering your life, you don’t screw with them. They are operating under the cover of authority, and you need to follow their instructions even if you don’t understand or like it.

You can always file charges later if you object.

I can see this officer getting a reprimand of sorts, but this girl was clearly out of control. Doing whatever it took to cuff her early on would have been advisable.

He didn’t seem to be able to control her as well as he should have been able to.

Officer was in the right. She asked for it and her BFF contributed. Baby daddy knew better.

He had several folks getting physical with him and she pushed him.

What sort of folks think it’s ok to push cops around or a traffic stop?

(disclosure..I have been beaten badly by cops for racial reasons and while handcuffed so I am no copophile)

I have seen big black women act just like this over shoplifting stops in a fancy mall and with all the little rich white toddlers in fancy prams with yoga mommies looking on in astonishment....repulsed and fixated as the robust black woman rolls around on the floor fighting with security guards and all the booty falls out of her leggings and bag.

State and provincial road rules in the United States and Canada typically require a driver to yield the right of way to a pedestrian crossing a road when the pedestrian crosses at a marked crosswalk or an unmarked (but not closed[clarification needed]) crosswalk. Unmarked crosswalks generally exist as the logical extensions of sidewalks at intersections with approximately right angles. Following the Uniform Vehicle Code, state codes often do not prohibit a pedestrian to cross a roadway between intersections if at least one of the two adjacent intersections is not controlled by a signal, but stipulate that a pedestrian not at a crosswalk must yield the right of way to approaching drivers. State codes often permit pedestrians to use roads which are not controlled access facilities and without sidewalks but they must keep to the leftmost side of the road unless this renders them invisible to approaching traffic.
1937 WPA poster warning pedestrians not to jaywalk

State codes may include provisions that allow local authorities to prohibit pedestrian crossing at locations outside crosswalks, but since municipal pedestrian ordinances are often not well known to drivers or pedestrians, and can vary from place to place in a metropolitan area that contains many municipalities, obtaining compliance with local prohibitions of pedestrian crossings much more restrictive than statewide pedestrian regulations can be difficult. Signs, fences, and barriers of various types (including planted hedges) have been used to prohibit and prevent pedestrian crossing at some locations; where detour to a legal crossing would be highly inconvenient, even fences are sometimes not effective. Street design, traffic design, and locations of major building entrances that make crosswalks the most logical and practical locations to cross streets are usually more effective than police enforcement in reducing the incidence of illegal or reckless pedestrian crossings.

At a signalized crossing, a pedestrian is subject to the applicable pedestrian traffic signal or, if no pedestrian signal is displayed, the signal indications for the parallel vehicular movement. A pedestrian signal permits a pedestrian to begin crossing a street during the “Walk” display; the pedestrian is usually considered to be “jaywalking” only if he entered the crosswalk at some other time. The meanings of pedestrian signal indications are summarized in Section 4E.02 of the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.[13]

Jaywalking is commonly considered an infraction but in some jurisdictions it is a misdemeanor or requires a court appearance. The penalty is usually a fine. In some cities (e.g. New York City, Chicago and Boston), although prohibited, “jaywalking” behavior has been so commonplace that police generally cite or detain jaywalkers only if their behavior is considered excessively dangerous or disruptive. Penalties for jaywalking vary by state or province and, within a state, may vary by county or municipality. In Tempe, Arizona, as of June 2006 jaywalking carried fines up to US$118; a sampling of other U.S. cities found fines ranging from US$1[14] to US$750.

The only reason why this is remarkable is because it was filmed.

Now they are making arrest filming a CRIME.

See?

I do think she deserved 2b arrested, 4 sure.

Black people will make cops’ jobs impossible, then lawyers assure the job becomes hyperLegal, engineers give us cheap reliable tiny cameras, and disliking the resulting footage, then authority turns to dictatorship.

So law abiding citizens lose, and become fodder for abuse by authority.

We’re entering the last stage described above.

Honestly, I am about as anti-cop as you can get, but after watching the video, the “victim” is at fault here. The title leads you to believe that the punch was unprovoked, but that is clearly not the case.

Yes, even the headline was a slap in the face.

Implying that if you jaywalk you'll get punched in the face.

Which, is ok with me anyway.

As part of growing up, some Blacks are taught that no matter what they do, they are right and nobody has authority over them.

I believe they are taught that so that they will not allow people to abuse them. Unfortunately, in situations like this, an officer does have the right to tell them to go stand by his car, and he will be along shortly.

You’ve got a conflict of training there. People taught not to allow someone to tell them what to do, and an officer that has every right to tell them what to do.

Reason goes right out the window for Blacks taught they are never to submit to someone else’s will.

It’s the same for anyone else taught that, and some White kids are taught that by never being told no in their life. It’s not limited to Blacks of course, and I’m not trying to imply it’s all Blacks. Certainly this Black girl was set up to do this stupid thing.

Yep: He was about to lose control.

Two criminals, resisting lawful arrest; grabbing, scratching, pushing him, and in front of a gathering crowd. He was a few seconds away from either being mobbed, or the bitches going for his gun.

If instead of being females, the violators would have been two men a few months older, would the cops actions be seen as reasonable?

Under the circumstances brought about by the actions of these cows and the incitement of the crowd, the cop took appropriate action. Frankly, if I was going to fault the cop for anything, it would be for not using quicker force to gain control of the situation.
