What happened?

There's a lot being discussed about the oil leaking in the gulf, and rightly it SHOULD be discussed.

But I haven't read very much about the reason WHY the well failed in the first place.

Flight 600 was torn apart in the media every which way but loose, but here is a situation that will ultimately kill America and, though it is important to figure out what to do and how ... I'd personally like to know what happened.

I can't just buy an equipment failure.

Yes .. my tin foil is on, but it occassionally tips out of protection mode.

There aren’t more than a handful of nations that have the capability to operate at that depth. Still looks like a BOP failure to me.

“There’s a lot being discussed about the oil leaking in the gulf”

I hadn’t heard about that; what happened?
And what gulf?

“Fixing the blame” is not the same thing as fixing the problem....

Even though Obama’s first conscious act was to send in battalions of lawyers, it would behoove whatever grownups are left in this country to find ways to cut through the bureaucracy and finger-pointing to get the mitigation and cleanup problems under control...

THEN, we can sit around to our heart’s content and play the ‘blame games’.....

Brazil is drilling more, drilling deeper and reaching out to talk to everyone who is looking to leave the US offshore drilling market- kind of like kids in a candy shop right now
They don’t seem worried about BOP technology

Did you see this?

Bush gave Deep Water Horizon 6 citations for safety violations- Obama gave it Awards.

From what I’ve heard, there was a build up of methane gas causing the fire. The oil rig sunk, breaking the pipe below.

Freepers who know more, please correct me if I’m wrong.

In addition, a pressure valve did not work, which would have prevented the leak.

My question is more scientific than trying to fix blame on anyone or thing.

I suppose cripplecreek may be correct in the fact that it IS an unusual circumstance and I'd suppose also the BOP could be a device subject to Murphy.

It doesn’t fit their agenda. Plus, where are all the nations of the world offering their assistance with it?

The Discovery channel ran a show about this the other day and it covered a lot about the early hours and days of the disaster that haven’t gotten much attention.

Looks like they spent the first week or so trying to get the BOP to work by different methods but just couldn’t make anything happen. Physically the BOP appears to be just fine but simply doesn’t work for some unknown reason.

I wonder if ice didn’t freeze the blades and valves. I know they did try getting the BOP to work by pumping hot hydraulic fluid into it.

It ain't the TV ... more like the nose on my face.

Unless I was lied to about zero signing an order to authorize 2 something million to relocate Palestinian refugee's in the US, or a mosque in NYC, or the law to make illegality illegal is really the way they formulate thought and language.

Or a ton of other et cetera's

There have been a couple of articles posted that lead to the BOP being known to have issues (they are hardly used anyway), the well was behind schedule, there were bad tests on parts of the well, the generators on the platform did not have proper doors to keep gas from getting in there and igniting.

BP were cutting corners (apparently typical), ignored well defects that should have been fixed, had a defective BOP and weren't following safe design practice on the rig.
