The Jewish people, according to archaeologists, originated in Babylon and Persia between the 4th and 6th centuries BC. The modern-day Jews most closely related to that original population are those in Iran, Iraq and Syria, whose closest non-Jewish relatives are the Druze, Bedouins and Palestinians, the study found.
Sometime in that period, the Middle Eastern and European Jews diverged and the European branch began actively proselytizing for converts.
At the height of the Roman Empire, about 10% of the empire's population was Jewish, although the bulk of them were converts. Some Khazars were also incorporated during this period.
"That explains why so many European and Syrian Jews have blue eyes and blond hair," Ostrer says. It also explains another of the team's findings that the population most closely related genetically to European Jews are Italians.

Also, if I am reading these books correctly, there is a difference between Anglo-Saxon and Celto-Saxon. I think it is along the lines that Celts are Irish and come from the tribe of Dan. I can't say for sure but I think the Anglos are different in the author's mind.
The Doc said I needed to disconnect myself from the net for a while. I have a real bad case of Post Traumatic Presidential Election Disorder (PTPED). I still go into fits, but I am getting better.

I understand. Sometimes I feel that knowing this, helps you understand the Bible a little more. I see a difference when scripture mentions Israel.
Hellenistic Judaism was intensely popular in the Roman Empire and thus the empire had to actually accommodate Jewish peculiarities. The Hellenistic Jews did proselytize people into the faith and this large Jewish population was the reason Bar Kochba thought he had a chance at prevailing against Rome.
However, there was a large divide between this population and the Zealots of Judea and the Jews of the rest of the Roman empire didn't rise against it. In the long run, Christian and Jewish Rabbinic authorities competed for these same populations and thus many of the calumnies in the Bible and the Christian New Testament came out of this rivalry.
Jews gave up on proselytizing new converts because of the experience with people who are only partially Jewish in their identity and the fact that this was dangerous and a hard sell once the Roman Emperors got serious about banning Jewish observance and throughout Jewish history until this last century.

That’s true, in fact there is a growing movement claiming that African-Americans are the true Jews. (That is sort of like saying that because I am your cousin, you no longer exist.)
Today’s African Americans are the real Jews from the bible

I can see Obama supporting this group of African-Americans. He’s got another problem with this effort though:
Aryan Race in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan,India

What is he going to do about all those Whites? (It must be a terrible thing to have so few achievements of your own that you have to try to steal the history of another people.)
With 10% of the Roman Empire being Jewish (perhaps 25% in the east), with Roman Legions moving from one end of the Empire to the next, with Jews intimately involved in the Empire (at war with it, granted privileges by it and doing business with it all depending on the time frame), many if not the majority of people of European descent probably have Jewish ancestors.

...Besides the Jews, there are other populations that share the “Abrahamic Genetic Signature” as their primary Y-markers.
These include Lebanese, Syrians, Druze, Iraqi Kurds, some southern and central Italians, and Hungarians. It is also found among some Armenians.
These may be descendants of Abraham through his grandson Esau, brother of Jacob, some of whose progeny, according to Talmudic tradition, founded the early roots of the empire of Rome. As Isaac’s son and Abraham’s grandson, Esau would also have had these same Y-chromosome lineage markers...
I would not doubt that either.
So yeah, Judaism was at one point a missionary religion. Roman and then Christian persecution put a stop to that, causing the Jewish community to turn inward instead.
Shalom.
At the height of the Roman Empire, about 10% of the empire's population was Jewish, although the bulk of them were converts. Some Khazars were also incorporated during this period.
The Western Roman Empire fell in 479CE. There are no references to Khazars prior to 586CE. And the early postulated date of conversion in 740CE.
Indeed, the mixing must have gone in both directions, and I have no doubt that many Christian Italian, French, Czech, and German people have partial Israelite ancestry.
A recent genetic study suggested Spanish and Portuguese people have a substantial portion of Israelite ancestry - 10 to 30 percent.
As for converts to Judaism, a new book some of you may be interested in is Eric Maroney’s “The Other Zions: The Lost Histories of Jewish Nations”.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1442200456/
Maroney is a fine writer who explores conversions to Judaism in Adiabene, Yemen, and elsewhere and how some of those converts had high status and political power.
Of related interest is my book “The Jews of Khazaria”, about the Khazar people’s conversion to Judaism and the issue of partial Slavic and Khazar ancestry in East European Jews. Although these new DNA studies showed those elements to be less significant than partial Italian/Greek/Mediterranean ancestry, they still exist. R1a1 was found in about 7.5% of East European Jews in Dr. Behar’s study “Contrasting patterns of Y chromosome variation in Ashkenazi Jewish and host non-Jewish European populations”.
Some East European Jews had Slavic names and spoke Slavic before the influx of Yiddish-speaking Jews. They could very well have intermarried with the local Belarusians and Ukrainians.

Yeah? Who wrote the Jewish scrolls that are 3,200 years old? What an asshat.
No worries, there's DNA testing. This may have some relevance but it only takes a test to find the Jews and the differing strains...however one can still convert and never have the DNA...eh Cap'n obvious to the rescue here.
