TAMPA An off-duty FBI agent shot and killed an Army veteran Wednesday night after a confrontation and chase at MacDill Air Force Base, officials said.
It all started at the base's family camp, a recreational vehicle area at the south end of the base, said Col. Larry Martin, 6th Air Mobility Wing commander. The veteran was visiting the base when an altercation broke out. He took off on a motorcycle with security officials in pursuit, according to Martin.
"He became more and more aggressive as the pursuit continued," said Dave Couvertier, a special agent with the FBI.
When the motorcyclist arrived at the gate on S Dale Mabry Highway, he got to his feet and confronted an FBI agent, who was at the base on unrelated business, with a knife, Couvertier said.
The agent opened fire and shot the veteran at least one time, he said.
Rescue workers were summoned to help the shooting victim just outside the MacDill gate at 6:47 p.m. The victim died at the scene, according to Tampa Fire-Rescue.
No one else was injured, and the victim's name was not immediately disclosed.
"Our security forces personnel acted promptly to safeguard the base and its personnel," Martin said.

Yeah, and if the guy is that close he can kill you even if you shoot him with a revolver. Unless they have ever fired a gun under stress chances are they will either miss or only wound the attacker.
Well...if you give any creedence to the title, he was performing his unrelated business while "off-duty".
If one threatens the life of legitimate authority with deadly force, then be prepared to meet the delivery of deadly force by legitimate authority.
Conflicts of deadly force have justified the truism, “don’t bring a knife to a gun fight”.
>Mark my words. There is more to this story - a lot more. This is connected to something bigger.
I agree.
The guy was being chased; we don’t know why.
There was an off-duty FBI agent, with a gun, on base.
(Something even soldiers typically aren’t allowed.)
It’s an assumption at this point, but it seems like the motorcyclist was trying to get away [possibly in fear for his life] and then was trapped at the gate... so he attacked his attacker[s]/pursuer[s].
Given these facts it seems as if there is a high chance everyone involved behaved rationally/legally; there are simply too few details here.
Pulling a knife on a security officer after a high speed chase trumps some of your question...
dont bring a knife to a gun fight
See, you just made my point... A knife, though it is a force multiplier like a tire iron or brass knuckles, is really more of a defensive weapon when a gun is involved.
The laws in most jurisdictions recolonize this, as shown by allowing the carrying of knives as opposed to the carrying of guns.
Yes, Gilbo3... It's called the Tuller (Tueller) drill. The only thing is, bad guys have gotten faster - so in reality it is sometimes more like 10 yards/30 feet as opposed to the old 7 yards/21 feet. At my company, we now start the drill at 30 feet and then have the knife wielding opponent move closer in 6 foot increments so that the students can gain a better understanding of just what they are up against when it comes to bad guys with edged weapons... I've been at this a while, and can clear a Blackhawk Serpa Level II holster and fire a fatal shot versus the average bad guy pretty quickly - he doesn't get his blade on me until he starts at about 7 feet if I must remain stationary. If I am allowed to move, he can be as close as 6 feet and still not get me. You have to "get off of the X" if you want to live.
Danny Inosanto is now 73 years old, and I'd feel certain that he would cover the 10 yards and shred any person before they ever knew what happened to them. Probably the fastest, most accurate knife combatant ever known.

I have been through that gate about 35 times in my life. It has alway been problem free. The only problems any where in the world have been at cinclantflt norfolk va. That is where I have had idiots at the gate.
