An Egyptian-American passenger was detained in Cairo Airport on Wednesday after authorities discovered several weapons in his luggage, security sources said.

The passenger, who arrived on an Egypt Air flight from New York’s JFK International Airport, tried to pass through customs with six metal boxes containing two 9mm pistols, 250 bullets, two swords, and 11 daggers, a security official at the Cairo International Airport told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

“Mohamed Ibrahim Khalf, a professor of botany at a US-based school, was transferred to a state security prosecutor for further investigation,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Doesn't JFK have an 5 dagger limit for carry on?

Of course! The weapons and ammo were ornamental only, for ceremonial purposes, so JFK waived them through.

Unless this guy was going to access his checked baggage while in flight, this doesn’t make any sense. In my experience, Customs in Egypt and other ME countries is generally very thorough - unless you’re a “VIP”, they open everything! There’s no way 6 metal boxes filled with weapons and ammo was going to get through. On the surface, doesn’t make sense...

It can be perfectly legal cargo in the baggage hold.

But there would be lots of paperwork, permits, and a heads up from JFK to the Egyptians.

The Egpytian officials obviously were caught by surprise and would not have detained him if all was legit and done in the open.

BTW, one report has it that a number of weapons were in secret compartments in the luggage, possibly a carry on.

From AFP:

Customs officials noticed the passenger looked nervous and decided to open his luggage. They found two handguns and 250 bullets hidden in metal boxes, the official said.

In a secret compartment in the bag, authorities also found two swords, five daggers and six knives, he added.

Sounds like he was arming more than himself. Someone would need a lot of hands to require all that.

Thanks for filling out the details. A little bit easier to understand. At least it seems the guy tried to hide the stuff. Well, Egyptian “justice” a little different from the “evil” Great Satan USA. It will definitely suck to be this guy!

Hunters in the US transport unloaded guns and ammo in checked luggage all the time. Can’t speak for Egyptian laws on gun ownership.

The TSA confirmed that two undeclared firearms were found in the man's luggage, but said there had been no security glitch at JFK.

Packing weapons in checked baggage is legal in the US. When a passenger is flying internationally it is the responsibility of the passenger and the airline to clarify rules at the destination for the goods, according to US law.

"Transporting firearms within the US in checked baggage is permitted if properly declared to the airline," the TSA said in a statement.

A US security official who asked not to be identified said that the TSA's job is to scan only for explosives, not weapons, in checked baggage.
