Of course! The weapons and ammo were ornamental only, for ceremonial purposes, so JFK waived them through.

tried to pass through customs with six metal boxes containing two 9mm pistols, 250 bullets, two swords, and 11 daggers, a security official at the Cairo International Airport told Al-Masry Al-Youm. Mohamed Ibrahim Khalf, a professor of botany at a US-based school, was transferred to a state security prosecutor for further investigation,

Unless this guy was going to access his checked baggage while in flight, this doesn’t make any sense. In my experience, Customs in Egypt and other ME countries is generally very thorough - unless you’re a “VIP”, they open everything! There’s no way 6 metal boxes filled with weapons and ammo was going to get through. On the surface, doesn’t make sense...

Hunters in the US transport unloaded guns and ammo in checked luggage all the time. Can’t speak for Egyptian laws on gun ownership.

Obviously it was his poverty and oppression that drove him to this desparate act.

Hmmmmmm. If we don’t properly screen departing passengers & their luggage, then why would we expect any other country to do so?
