An Egyptian-American passenger was detained in Cairo Airport on Wednesday after authorities discovered several weapons in his luggage, security sources said.

The passenger, who arrived on an Egypt Air flight from New York’s JFK International Airport, tried to pass through customs with six metal boxes containing two 9mm pistols, 250 bullets, two swords, and 11 daggers, a security official at the Cairo International Airport told Al-Masry Al-Youm.

“Mohamed Ibrahim Khalf, a professor of botany at a US-based school, was transferred to a state security prosecutor for further investigation,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

“Mohamed Ibrahim Khalf, a professor of botany at a US-based school,..”

Obviously it was his poverty and oppression that drove him to this desparate act.

TSA says there were two undeclared weapons.... Meaning what? That the weapons were undeclared to TSA at JFK?

So, its OK to bring weapons into the airport terminal in your bags and then check in the bags?

I recall having to answer a lot of questions about the content of checked on bags.

The TSA can't be searching obama's buds now.

It is NOT true the TSA doesn't profile;they REVERSE profile:search a white granny in a wheelchair but ignore the nervous Muslim terrorists.

Yes. You're supposed to declare them to the airline, and they have to be in locked hard-sided cases, but they're perfectly legal.

Hmmmmmm. If we don’t properly screen departing passengers & their luggage, then why would we expect any other country to do so?

Evidently they weren't declared to Egypt Air if Cairo customs was surprised.

Seems odd that Egypt Air doesn't scan the luggage that was not hard-sided or locked, for all the swords and daggers.

Agreed, passengers couldn't access their checked-on weapons later, but what about the safety of baggage handlers throwing around soft-sided luggage with swords inside that could easily poke out and cause all kinds of harm.

“Egypt detains US passenger with weapons in bags”
(AFP) – 2 days ago

SNIPPET: “CAIRO — Egyptian authorities detained a passenger arriving from New York’s JFK airport Wednesday with handguns, ammunition and knives in his bag, but US officials said there had been no security lapse.

Mohamed Ibrahim Marei, a US university professor of Egyptian origin, arrived on EgyptAir flight 986 from John F. Kennedy Airport.

Customs officials in Cairo checked his luggage because he looked nervous, and found two handguns and 250 rounds of ammunition hidden in metal boxes, an Egyptian official said on condition of anonymity.

In a secret compartment in the bag, authorities also found two swords, five daggers and six knives, the official added.”
