Archaeologists are stumped after finding a 100-year-old Swiss watch in an ancient tomb that was sealed more than 400 years ago. They believed they were the first to visit the Ming dynasty grave in Shangsi, southern China, since its occupant's funeral. But inside they uncovered a miniature watch in the shape of a ring marked 'Swiss' that is thought to be just a century old.

“About six months ago, someone here posted an article from some Southwestern magazine about a place in Arizona (location left deliberately vague it but might have been near Sedona) where there was a rock archway out in the desert near some buttes and a canyon. There had been reports of people going through the archway and ending up in some other time and place.

Could someone who remembers this please re-post the link to the article?

Thanks.”

I’d be interested in seeing that, as well. I know Louis Lamour wrote one of his western novels with a location like that. Can’t remember the title, though.

In that case, it must be a 401 year old tomb.

What mystery?

Obviously, the tomb was opened at one time.

Re: "Oregon Vortex"

Distorted and off-angle walls, floors -- and perspective effects... Purpose-built hoax site. No mystery there at all.

"..."So," you say, "surely there is something more to such a long-standing attraction then mere illusion?" If the terrain within the 165-foot circular area possesses paranormal phenomena, they weren't apparent last September (1997) when three members of Oregonians for Science and Reason (O4SR), Ted Clay, a skeptic from Ashland, and Josh Reese and myself, both from Salem, visited the site. ..."

Why do the two identical twins in this room appear to be drastically different in size?

What's Going On?

The distorted room seen above is named after the American ophthalmologist Adelbert Ames, Jr., who first constructed such a room in 1946. He based his design on a concept originally conceived by Hermann Helmholtz in the late 19th century.

There are two illusions associated with the Ames Room. First the room appears cubic when viewed monocularly from a special viewing point (the true shape of the room is trapezoidal). Secondly, within an Ames Room people or objects can appear to grow or shrink when moving from one corner to the other.

If it were really Swiss, it would say “Peking Watch Company” on it. The Swiss got their start and were notorious for making knock-off watches. One Swiss fake in the 19th c were timepieces of a manufacturer in my state: “The New Haven Watch Co”. The Swiss were in part responsible for the 1890 law requiring imports to be marked with the country of origin.

The Hostess Twinkies in the corner still had a creamy center.

That doesn't date the find nearly as well as you'd think. ("It's not baked, it's extruded. And it uses EverFresh(tm) technology for the creamy center.")
