It is not the joke itself that is the problem. It is the mindset that believes that making jokes that feed the old stereotypes that is the problem.
The cynical belief in this admin that Americans (and the people in the room) are nothing more than anti-semites or racists. That is the problem. It feeds their belief that but for their boots on the necks of the people all sorts of bad things would happen.

Zeros campaign against WS is not about financial overhaul, but a sohpmoric belief that WS is just a bunch of “Jewish Bankers” that need to be stopped from their greed. Reminds me of the 1933 actions by the National socialist to remove ALL Jews from the courts and Law profession.

Did the General portray a "Jewish Merchant willing to assist the Taliban", by telling of 2 Jewish brothers gaming a Muslim desperate for water by bouncing he back and forth between them?

No, it was not my interpretation that introduced the "greedy Jewish merchant" theme nor the prejudice to the joke.

And it is not my honest view of the General's telling of that version of that joke before that audience that will adversely damage his "esteem." The General should be aware of the old adage "lie down with dog, get up with fleas."

A Taliban militant gets lost and is wandering around the desert looking for water. He finally arrives at a store run by a Jew and asks for water. The Jewish vendor tells him he doesn’t have any water but can gladly sell him a tie. The Taliban, the jokes goes on, begins to curse and yell at the Jewish storeowner. The Jew, unmoved, offers the rude militant an idea: Beyond the hill, there is a restaurant; they can sell you water. The Taliban keeps cursing and finally leaves toward the hill. An hour later he’s back at the tie store. He walks in and tells the merchant: “Your brother tells me I need a tie to get into the restaurant.”

This “joke” and it's subject did not spring into existence yesterday. It plays upon millenia of stereotype regarding Jews.

Moreover, in the joke the Jew is a man with capital and ease (he MUST have water or he himself would be searching for water) who turns away a bedraggled sufferer, to his own Jewish brother, who then turns away the sufferer on (nudge smirk) a sartorial technicality. The sufferer is trapped and helpless between the two powerful Jews who merely play with him.

If the two Jews AREN'T selfish, uncaring and greedy then there is no “joke”. Greed is the tiny jewel upon which the big “joke” turns.

After Hitler invaded and overran a good chunk of Russia, Stalin reopened the churches (closed by the Communists) and released priests from his Gulag to help rally the people to die fighting the Germans. Of cause, after the war, he again closed the churches and rearrested the priests.
