The real John McCain has been kidnapped and an impostor is running against J. D. Hayworth in the Arizona U.S. Senate primary.
It does sound far-fetched, but stranger things have happened in American politics. It's actually quite clever when you think about it.
John McCain realized quite early that he could not win re-election to the Senate if he campaigned on his actual record that is, if he campaigned as who he is. So, he arranged to be kidnapped and secluded in a five-star resort in Fiji while a well-groomed look-alike, McCain 2.0, campaigns in his place.
McCain 2.0 is campaigning as a strong, unapologetic Reagan conservative.
(snip)
The mainstream media are not blind; they realize this is not the real John McCain. But they are playing along with the charade. It's the least they can do to help their favorite "maverick" deal with his "lunatic right-wing base."
Yet a funny thing happened on the way to the scripted victory dance. Despite a fawning press and a huge money advantage, the most recent Rasmussen Poll shows former Rep. J. D. Hayworth is now only 5 points behind McCain 2.0. Conservative activists in Arizona are not following the script.
I confess, I have my doubts that the impostor McCain 2.0 can keep up the real McCain hidden for 14 more weeks.
(snip)
But 2010 is no ordinary election year. The natives are restless, and conservatives in Arizona are asking hard questions and demanding McCain debate Hayworth face-to-face. Can the McCain impostor stay on message and win over skeptical conservatives in debates and town-hall meetings?

All your AZ base belong to JD!
I have often wondered whether his itch to appease the neo Communist Democrats comes from a reflex of appeasing the Commies in NVA to avoid more pain.
I think there is a psychological component for him to cross the aisle to the neo Communist Democrats and it is quite a fault.
* Standing ovation *
Nice to see him crossing the aisle to campaign.
Pray for America
He's still applying that lesson today, as he tries to avoid his own political death.
Interesting theory. It certainly can't be immediately discounted.
He hates the Conservatives more than he hates any single political group in this country. He certainly doesn't hate liberals. He's spent his career "reaching across the aisle to them". He hates those who criticize him.
And now he's got his chance. Six years, no more worries about re-election, elder-statesman status no matter who is President... and he's going to stick it to us every way he can.
This will be his legacy. Getting even with us.
And Sarah Palin is aiding a abetting that. And so are a lot of other good people.
It's unconscionable.
Darn right “The natives are restless”.
They are very restless where I live.
Talked today to a lady who is a life long Democrat. She has volunteered time and effort for canvassing. She donated money all of her adult life to the Dems.
She hates NObama with a passion. She supported him before the election, and now is totally feeling like she has been stabbed in the back.
Quisling bump!
Whatever happened to the idea of quitting while you’re ahead? The longer he hangs on, the more foolish he appears.

I wonder what Mr. McCain thinks of it.
Do the right thing, AZ. Or go get your $50 an hour lettuce picking jobs.
McCain 2.0...Giggle
At least “gay” can’t be put on him! Maybe?
Curious. Why is J.D. still 5 points behind McPain if McPain is so reviled?
At this point in time J.D. should already be in charge of the hammer.
Excellent. Everybody’s got to watch the video at post #3.
McCain is reviled by conservatives. Once, he was adored by moderates and independents.
As the amnesty and illegal immigration issue has come to the fore in Arizona, his perfidy and outright lying on these issues has become more broadly known -- and the moderates and independents are starting to drift away.
A long-time incumbent who can't reach 50% in the polls at this stage is historically "in trouble". Especially, if he has the full support of the media -- who absolutely detest J.D. Hayworth.
McCain still has to be viewed as the favorite. But a Hayworth victory is clearly conceivable.
Count Michael Medved in with the McCain-supporting Hayworth-bashers.
