No link yet, only from live broadcast:

In a press release just handed to Fox by the FBI, the six Michigan residents, two from Ohio, one from Indiana are charged with “seditious conspiracy.”

Reportedly, Hutaree is accused of attempted use of weapons of mass destruction. Charges range from August 2008 to today.

The militia group Hutaree are said to have conspired to oppose by force the authority of the US Government.

The members viewed local, state and federal law enforcement as "the brotherhood," also known as their enemy, and have been preparing, the FBI says, to engage them in armed conflict.

According to one plan released by the FBI, the group was to kill a law enforcement officer, then during the funeral precession, hit again with IEDs to kill more LEOs.

What the law says ...

TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 115 > § 2384

§ 2384. Seditious conspiracy

If two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to overthrow, put down, or to destroy by force the Government of the United States, or to levy war against them, or to oppose by force the authority thereof, or by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States, or by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States contrary to the authority thereof, they shall each be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both.

This and related statutes — and more importantly their interpretation — can be very dangerous to Free Speech. This is especially true if it's abused by the Government and the Political Opposition (in this case, the Democratic Party and Democratic politicians, the MSM and the Left-Wing Blogosphere).

I just read through the indictment. Not too impressive, to say the least.

From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms.

1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy.

Creating a terrifying threat - hydra-like, secretive, evil - is an old trick. It can, like Hitler's invocation of a communist threat to the nation's security, be based on actual events (…, the Reichstag fire of February 1933, was swiftly followed in Nazi Germany by passage of the Enabling Act, which replaced constitutional law with an open-ended state of emergency).

2. Create a gulag

Once you have got everyone scared, the next step is to create a prison system outside the rule of law.

3. Develop a thug caste

When leaders who seek what I call a "fascist shift" want to close down an open society, they send paramilitary groups of scary young men out to terrorise citizens. …the Brownshirts staged violent rallies throughout Germany. This paramilitary force is especially important in a democracy: you need citizens to fear thug violence and so you need thugs who are free from prosecution.

4. Set up an internal surveillance system

In Mussolini's Italy, in Nazi Germany, in communist East Germany, in communist China - in every closed society - secret police spy on ordinary people and encourage neighbours to spy on neighbours.

5. Harass citizens' groups

The fifth thing you do is related to step four - you infiltrate and harass citizens' groups.

…or did they?

6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release

This scares people. It is a kind of cat-and-mouse game. Nicholas D Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, the investigative reporters who wrote China Wakes: the Struggle for the Soul of a Rising Power, describe pro-democracy activists in China, such as Wei Jingsheng, being arrested and released many times. In a closing or closed society there is a "list" of dissidents and opposition leaders: you are targeted in this way once you are on the list, and it is hard to get off the list.

7. Target key individuals

When Goebbels purged the civil service in April 1933, attorneys were "coordinated" too, a step that eased the way of the increasingly brutal laws to follow.

8. Control the press

Italy in the 1920s, Germany in the 30s, East Germany in the 50s, Czechoslovakia in the 60s, the Latin American dictatorships in the 70s, China in the 80s and 90s - all dictatorships and would-be dictators target newspapers and journalists. They threaten and harass them in more open societies that they are seeking to close, and they arrest them and worse in societies that have been closed already.

9. Dissent equals treason

Cast dissent as "treason" and criticism as "espionage'. Every closing society does this, just as it elaborates laws that increasingly criminalise certain kinds of speech and expand the definition of "spy" and "traitor".

10. Suspend the rule of law

This means that in a national emergency - which the president now has enhanced powers to declare - he can send Michigan's militia to enforce a state of emergency that he has declared in Oregon, over the objections of the state's governor and its citizens.

I'm surprised they moved on this group - after all, there weren't dozens of children to burn to death.

I'd still like to know how Reno and gang got off scot free from the crimes they committed.

Any ammunition reloader with gunpowder can be turned into a pipe bomb/IED/WMD maker with a boilerplate BATF app.

Legal gunpowder, plus the crap anybody has in their basement, garage and workshop, plus one lie coerced out of a BATF snitch, and you too could be arrested as a bomb maker.

So conventional homemade bombs are now considered WMDs?

I guess "Destructive Device" didn't sound scary enough.

Anytime I hear the feds make a pipe bomb case against gunnies, I think of how easy it is to gin up a bogus case against any ammunition reloader.

I was thinking this as I read this thread.

I have been an avid re-loader since I was in Junior High (back then there were no age restrictions on components so I could make all the ammo I needed to shoot during the weekends). Even though I do not have large stockpiles of powder, just a few one pound cans of different types, they could still charge me since the powder could be used in items I have around the house to make a improvised device.

A decent judge would throw this out early but it would bankrupt me and that is what the Government wants to do: If they can't put you in jail, then they will file false charges that will drain your finances dry.

But is teaching preparedness for the tribulation and violence against the anti-christ, but not acting upon it, a crime?

If you believe in Him, he (the anti-christ) is powerless against you.

Yes, exactly. And part two of the “win-win” for the govt is that they will so bamboozle the sheeple via the Pravda MSM, that soon reloading will be illegal, since it involves “explosives.”

Count on it.

The fedgoons REALLY hate reloaders.

AKA a reloader's gunpowder, plus random crap in his basement and garage, plus one snitch's coerced lie.

This = pipe bomb = IED = WMD in Obama's USSA.

Finally, the BATFags have a POTUS to really love.

Back durning the Civil War, a dock worker was thrown in jail for saying something bad about Lincoln.
Sounds like history is repeating itself. Unless the charges of WMD are true, this sounds like BS.

The fact of the matter is, this group might be a group of whack-a-doodles. The left always reacts to anything it fears most. They had a cow over Palin’s “reload” comment and they have cows over anything having to do with Christiandom and guns. This group just happens to marry the two and is justifying violence in the name of Jesus Christ, which I find sickening.

Ultimately, sure. But he can still have you and your family imprisoned, tortured, and killed.

-- Any ammunition reloader with gunpowder can be turned into a pipe bomb/IED/WMD maker with a boilerplate BATF app. --

It takes even less than that, but certainly, that would suffice. Without going into details, it is trivially easy to make an IED without a chemical explosive charge.

which will, or which may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant

That said (and I think the definition of WMD makes a mockery of the feds), if these clowns were preparing to assassinate local LEO, then they are in fact dangerous. Just like the cranky bootlegger is.
