Boehner to Pelosi: “Every Member Should Stand Before the American People and Announce Vote”
GOPLeader.gov ^ | 3/19/2010 | John Boehner

Posted on 03/19/2010 5:49:47 PM PDT by SeattleBruce

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today sent a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) requesting that the final health care votes be recorded by “call of the roll” so that every lawmaker is required to publicly announce their vote on the House floor.

“This weekend’s votes will be among the most consequential votes we will ever cast as Members of Congress,” Boehner says in the letter to Speaker Pelosi. “As such, it is my belief that every Member should stand before the American people and announce his or her vote as the final decision is made.”

According to the rules of the House of Representatives, “Unless the Speaker directs otherwise, the Clerk shall conduct a record vote or quorum call by electronic device. … The Speaker may direct the Clerk to conduct a record vote or quorum call by call of the roll. In such a case the Clerk shall call the names of Members, alphabetically by surname.”

The full text of Leader Boehner’s letter to Speaker Pelosi follows.

Boehner needs to keep up the drumbeat. Barack the Kenyan has told his minions to show some “courage”. That’s a good idea. They need to show it to the American people by standing up and voting. Cowards!

I think it should be broadcast on all major networks and each member of Congress should be required to stand before the cameras and say:

“I, Congressman(or woman), (Democrat/Republican) from the (District) of the state of (State), say (Aye or Nay) to this resolution. I cast my vote today before the eyes of the American people.”

That would put each and every member of the House ON THE SPOT!!!!!!

Yeah right, like she is going to do that.

I'm not sure she has a choice. A lawyer called Rush today and said 20% could demand a recorded vote. Mark Levin called in and said it had to be a bill that was in front of the House but this is, right?

The GOP can’t force this. It’s totally up to Pelosi on this one as she’s the only one empowered under House rules to make it a roll-call vote. This was more of a publicity stunt in requesting this.

“Every Member Should Stand Before the American People and Announce Vote”

The American people are watching what they do and say. No more hiding nor backroom deal trickery will be tolerated.

1/5th of the members present or 44 members if a bare minimum quorum is there in the House can demand a recorded vote under the Constitution but it doesn’t have to be a roll call vote (That’s why they ask members requesting a recorded vote to rise and remain standing). The House has used electronic voting for decades to publish the yeas and nays on the journal. An actual calling of the roll is only subject to the discretion of the chair.

Conservatives can learn a lot this week from who spoke up.

Where is RINO Romney
as the Dems push through ObamaCARE?

Answer: The RINO coward is hiding, sending out his saboteurs
against Gov. Palin and all conservative GOP stars again,
selling his ghostwritten book, helping Gore push the fraud of climate change,
and attacking the “tea party”.

Good, put them on the spot. If they won’t do it, taunt them. If the bill is so wonderful and if most American’s are truly for it, what’s the problem, what are you scared of? Why wouldn’t they stand for all the world to see them vote for this bill?

If this bill is so great and everyone will be grateful it was passed, you’d think they would jump at the chance to vote publicly on it and gain in popularity.

Truth is, they know it’s crap and most know it’s real reason, and they’re scared of the hangman.

I faxed a letter to Boehner's office and Ryan's offices on Thursday with the same concept but couldn't get through to Rush's show. I'm glad a lawyer concurs and had the time to get through. The reference is Article I, Section 5, third paragraph.

I believe the Constitution supersedes the Speaker of the House, and Pelosi's refusal to honor the request of the 20%+ for a roll call vote by name can and should cause an immediate Constitutional crisis.

“This weekend’s votes will be among the most consequential votes we will ever cast as Members of Congress...”

Sorry. The roll call to pass Roe v. Wade was MUCH more destructive to the fabric of our society than this stuff...which will be tied up in our courts for decades to come!

Just think. We could have the male version of Sarah Palin in the White House RIGHT THIS VERY MINUTE if Congress hadn’t doomed 50 million babies to destruction.

How soon we forget! Let’s keep thing in perspective. There’s no WAY that THIS is the most important thing that Congress has ever passed or defeated. And it’ll be heading to the Supreme Court eventually...

Marbery vs. Madison?

Dred Scott v. Sandford?

Brown v. Board of Education?

Mapp v. Ohio? (Search Warrants)

Congress thinks they matter. Fools.

We The People matter! However, our representatives have been asleep at the wheel for WAY too long!
