An Apple a Day? Study Shows Soluble Fiber Boosts Immune System

A new University of Illinois study touts the benefits of soluble fiber -- found in oats, apples, and nuts, for starters -- saying that it reduces the inflammation associated with obesity-related diseases and strengthens the immune system.

This happens because soluble fiber causes increased production of an anti-inflammatory protein called interleukin-4, he said.

Scientists have long known that obesity is linked to inflammatory conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease.

Yet, in a recent study, the U of I scientists demonstrated that fat tissue produces hormones that appear to compensate for this inflammation. "There are significant anti-inflammatory components in fat tissue and, if they were strategically unleashed, they could potentially protect obese people from further inflammatory insults, such as a heart attack or stroke. In obese animals, you can see the body compensating in an effort to protect itself," he said.

"Now we'd like to find a way to keep some of the anti-inflammatory, positive effects that develop over time with a high-fat diet while reducing that diet's negative effects, such as high blood glucose and high triglycerides. It's possible that supplementing a high-fat diet with soluble fiber could do that, even delaying the onset of diabetes," he said.

Good sources of soluble fiber are oat bran, barley, nuts, seeds, lentils, citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, and carrots. "We used a citrus-based pectin in our study," Sherry said.

I often peel, dice, and simmer a couple of apples with a handful of raisins for breakfast. Tastes like apple pie!

The doctors generally suggest a “varied diet” today. We have scarcely scratched the surface of the pro’s and con’s of various foods.

Four years in complete remission.

My body cannot take prosecced ( I cant spell and spell check is no good with my archaic browser) foods. Period.

It can take anything raw and veggie.

Funny thing about apples is they dont metab with my body.

Most days I check blood glucose to make sure I am not Hypo.

Pineapple OTOH works great with my metab.

Apples skyrocket me, as do grapes.
I think it is all a custom plan for each of us.

Raw tomatoes are my best freind or canned tomato juice as breakfest.

Banana OTOH treats me like an apple does.

Both apple/banana I can only eat a quarter a day. Which ends up wasting or getting chomped on in the day any ways.

Cereal such as Cherios or raison bran have always been big spikers.

I do believe we each have custom system and so ya have to find where your (lotsa finger pricks) own mode.

One thing I like but cant find in stores is Ice Milk as like in IceCream.

McDonalds one dollar Ice Milk (cream) is a nice treat. OTOH A MC D Choc Milkshake for a road trip/meal not so nice. : )

Being single and a raw veggie eater I go out once a week to enjoy comfort food Izzys/Mexican whatever and that seems to work for me but maybe not so good for the next guy/gal.

For a ‘pleasantly plump’ (aka FAT) person like me, this is useful information. Thanks for posting!

I’ve been eating an orange every day. And just bought some barley and made a beef barley soup. It was quite good. Mr sneakers is a fruit-a-holic and is skinny as a rail. I should learn to eat like him! He always goes for the fruit salad for desert. I go for the pie.

No wonder I’m in the shape I am!

Sounds like you may be gluten sensitive and/or insulin resistant.

Try a slice of green apple with a TBSP of peanut/almond butter on it-or eat fruit w/cheese. Don’t have it alone.

The fat slows down the sugar in the fruit so it doesn’t race into your bloodstream and cause your blood sugar to drop like a rock! (I have Hypo really bad)

The inflammatory process caused by eating gluten (wheat, rye, barley products-and I can’t have oats either) really messes with how your body absorbs things....and messes with your blood sugar etc.

It is truly amazing; I’m just learning all of this after being sick for YEARS-and last year was told I was pre-diabetic-and I had successfully dieted and lost a LOT of weight- and was eating all good stuff.

But there is now a blood test for gluten sensitivity.Ask your dr about it.
There are also a couple of good books: “The Glycemic Load Diet”-Rob Thompson MD and “The New Glucose Revolution-Low GI Gluten-Free Eating Made Easy”-Dr Jennie Brand-Miller

I had not drank beer for years but tried Ale tasting last year at an International Doggie Brewfest.

First found out beer and ale are worlds apart in flavor.
Second I like Deschuttes Black BUtte..has a hint of chocolate.

Third ended up with the worst tummy ache and a case of gout which I had not had in years.

I am alergic to Ale!

A friend also told me to put the PB on the apple.

Nah I dont like apples enough to add calories/fat to it.

Or ask my doc for another test.
He does my thyroid/A1C and other stuff twice a year and it all comes out normal so I will stick to my raw veggie as my main source.

I love sunflower seeds on my salad and feta or gargonzola both a must to make the salad palatable.

Mostly just listen to my body and check my blood levels during the day and I am all good.

Oh and the gout I cured with cherry juice not a shot from the doc.

Another person I know just got a shot for gout (cortazone) and her BG shot up to near 500.

No thanks I told her about the cherry juice shots and advil.

As I age and have a son who is medically fragile quad we have had our share of doctors and have learned in some cases home care remedies are the first and usually the best route.

No pharmas unless it is like my thyroid med that I have to have in order to stay on the planet.

My grandma was a vegetarian Seventh day Adventist, but she did make two kinds of homemade bread every day. :-)

With a good knife, it's quicker than it sounds once you get used to it, less than five minutes. I've never convinced anyone to try, it though!
