Barack Obama opponents urge census boycott......

Conservative opponents of the Obama administration are urging supporters to resist the upcoming US census, saying it asks too many questions and reflects increasing government intrusion into private matters.

The census, held every 10 years since 1790, is becoming a focal point for the growing anti-government movement in the US.

The government will endeavour to count every person living in the US, regardless of legal, immigration or citizenship status. The count, which helps determine political representation and the distribution of hundreds of billions of dollars in government funds, is mandated by the constitution.

Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a virulently conservative, anti-Obama Republican from Minnesota, has urged supporters to give only the number of people living in their household, saying nothing more is required by the constitution. Participation in the census is required by law and to refuse, or to falsify information, is punishable by fines that can range from $100 up to $500 (about £60 to £300), although the law is rarely enforced.

Man oh man - do you really think that giving your actual name means there will be a more fair account of U.S. Citizens versus illegal aliens... ?

Does the name ‘Juan Morales’ or Juanita Rodriquez mean the person is an American Citizen or an illegal alien?

What kind of reasoning is that?

Even if they compared names to SSN databases - do you know that the most common identities stolen in the last several years are those of Hispanic/Latino Americans...? Stolen by or sold to illegal aliens...

There is no way a name on a census survey has any relationship to being an American Citizen...

Wishful thinking at best.

Does the form indicate what number system the answers should be used? Octal? Hexadecimal? Binary?

The Census was moved fromm the Federal Department and put under direct control of the WHite House. This was done the second week after the inauguration.

I decided then that they would not get ANY cooperation from me, without a search warrant.Since that time some idiot doing pre census work came to our house and logged our location on a GPS device. These guys are up to NO GOOD.

I got that today to, does anyone know what all ten questions are? What about this offensive long form I’ve been hearing about that asks everything from when you go to work, to how many toilets is that actually going to be sent to some people? If you answer the letter do they still come out to bug you? I don’t want any acorn types at my door.

If we’re trying to get past racial divides, why don’t we take the race question OFF EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT FORM.

Do they verify any of the information, such as name on there? As in check it against records or ask for ID?

Very true. I was only commenting on how little help that particular census form is to genealogists. It has been interesting to see how other categories have been added through the years.

No information about specific people is ever provided by the census (other than geneological data many decades later.)

Great lengths are taken to prevent individual households or people from being identified. What is available is general demographic data about towns, etc.

Census workers never, ever ask for ID and there is no cross-checking of information other than what is provided by the household.

The replacement for the old “Long Form” - the American Community Survey, which is now continuous - was still asking for citizenship a couple years ago.

It’s irrelevant to a “count” - the Constitution says nothing about citizenship, just “persons;” - thus all persons have always been used for redistrictricting, including non-citizens.

I read this excellent suggestion:

Instead, we should answer QUESTION 9 by checking the last option — "Some other race" — and writing in "American." It's a truthful answer but at the same time is a way for ordinary citizens to express their rejection of unconstitutional racial classification schemes. In fact, "American" was the plurality ancestry selection for respondents to the 2000 census in four states and several hundred counties.

So remember: QUESTION 9 — "Some other race" — "American". Pass it on.

I think I will just post these on my front door.

Why did you give them names? Does the constitution require that?

“American” is not a race, it’s a nationality.

If your intent is to adhere to the constitution, only #1 should be answered. If you answer any others, even with “N/A”, it implies you agree the questions can be asked and you are answering the ones you feel like answering. Also, answering “N/A” to one of them begs the question of why the others wouldn’t also be “N/A” under your reasoning that you only have to answer what the constitution requires. Consistency is the key.

Sending that as a reply is a sure-fire way to draw attention to yourself. It will bring nothing but grief. Giving the head count is all that is required.

“American” is not a race. It’s a nationality. It’d be better to not answer than to write in a dumb answer, especially if you don’t intend to answer all the questions. If your intent is to provide only what is constitutionally allowable, then nothing except the number of people living there should be answered. You’re just looking for trouble if you’re inconsistent.

I urge Americans to throw the census forms away and run off any census taker that arrives at the door.

I am surprised that Democrats are even complaining about this. If less Republicans and even better conservatives do not fill out the form than that means even more money for the Dems. Strange situation.

I plan to state that I am a Native American. The simple truth is; I am an American and I was born here, thus Native.
