Here it comes - Obama to Give Black Farmers $1.25B in Reparations (more redistribution)

Black farmers – possibly over 70,000 of them – will get cash payments and debt relief from the federal government totaling $1.25 billion, in reparation for alleged racial discrimination suffered under the Department of Agriculture’s loan programs, the Obama Administration has agreed.

The president announced the deal on Thursday, applauding Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Attorney General Eric Holder for “bringing these long-ignored claims of African American farmers to a rightful conclusion.”

The Washington Post called the settlement “part of a wider effort by Obama and senior officials to dispense with lawsuits stemming from America’s checkered civil rights legacy.”

House Majority Whip and Congressional Black Caucus member James Clyburn cheered the deal. “History has taught us to never give up when fighting for what is right,” he said in a statement. “What happened to these black farmers was wrong, and we now have the opportunity to make it right.”

Since 2000, the family has been among 110 Mexican American farmers nationwide suing the Agriculture Department and its Farm Service Agency, alleging systematic discrimination in farm credit loan programs, disaster relief loans and noncredit benefit programs.

Though the farmers were denied a class-action designation, their lawyers hope to reverse that decision and negotiate a settlement on their behalf that will erase their debt and allow them to rebuild their family farms.

Next week, a court in Washington, D.C., will review the status of the case.

Garcia vs. Vilsack, of which the Rodriguezes are a part of, mirrors Pigford vs. Glickman, which was waged and won by African American farmers. It was settled in the late 1990s for $2.2 billion, and this year the Obama administration allocated an additional $1.2 billion to its fund.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has said he’s committed to eradicating discrimination in his department, once described in a government report as “the last plantation” and perceived as part of “a conspiracy to force minority and socially disadvantaged farmers off their land through discriminatory loan practices.”

The Rodriguez Brothers’ lawyers — Stephen Hill of Howrey LLP, former FBI Director Louis Freeh and former federal Judge Eugene Sullivan — describe the treatment their clients faced as “institutional racism.” They use words such as blatant, insidious and deep-seeded.

“When President Obama said he was allocating an additional $1.2 billion to resolve the claims of black farmers who missed the filing deadline, he said he was closing a chapter on the ugly history of the USDA,” Hill said. “I submit the USDA needs to close the entire book, and the only way to do that is to resolve the claims of victims that suffered the same discrimination at the hands of USDA.”

**********

So it was settled but Obama decided to give them more and now the hispanics need theirs. So whites are never discriminated against in this “colored blind” world called America. What a load of crap.

Yes it has to go through Congress. NewsMax might have mentioned that if they engaged in anything similar to journalism.

But you mention reparations to her and she does a slow burn that begins to melt a hole in the space-time continuum.

Your wife isn't the only one. That's why NewsMax chose the headline they chose, even though this has nothing AT ALL to do with reparations for slavery.

This settlement pertains to alleged discrimination that occurred from 1981 to 1997. Now why did NewsMax leave that out, and then spend the second half of their article talking about slavery reparations?

Obama is going for everything! Outrageous overreach!

Cloward-Piven Strategy. Overwhelm the system in hopes conservatives just give up and become complacent. This President is out of control. We're getting awfully close to dictatorship.

This is incredible. When he was elected this was a fear, and we were told he would never dare try it.

I think the Democrats will lose every seat thats in play. Its a matter of survival now.

Do I think Obama is a racist, yes, I do.

I think the worst insult you could give Obama, to make him squirm— call him white boy, or white-bread chickenchit.

In this case, looking into it, it seems it’s a story of gov’t corruption. (beyond Obama)

Just another way our politicians have found to skim some tax payer dollars, to benefit themselves by feeding the lawyers.

I agree though... Obama is a racist and I don’t give two chits, if in saying that, I am called racist.

Somebody can call me a purple dog, doesn’t make me a purple dog—I look in the mirror and I’m human.

Yeah, the whites are in on it, too.

*Even black caucus leader Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., in comments about the white farmer lawsuit against USDA, has said, “I can see little difference in the way black farmers were treated in Pigford and what has happened to the farmers in this suit… I believe (the white farmers’ lawsuit) has the potential to be larger than the black farmers’ suit once word gets out.”*
http://deltafarmpress.com/mag/farming_usdas_settlement_black/index.html?imw=Y

It was a scam. (there were claims and I’m sure some were valid, some were not)

The politicians and the lawyers, they used *discrimination* to open this barn door WIDE for themselves.

This was their tool to rip off the tax payer.

For any to speak against it, they would have been racist, cold, thoughtless. Guilt.

Now look at it, it’s obvious it’s not about color.

Though black people were used, as the key... to turn a lock, making lawyers and politicians richer.

The farmers make some money but nothing like the lawyers get from this deal.

This award was a hard fought inclusion of more blacks to be compensated, because they were left out of a previous, absolutely correct Supreme Court decision. It is the right thing to do.

I’m from the South. Our banks denied loans to blacks during Jim Crow. It is a fact. It was a foreclosure scheme and some blacks lost their property because of racist banking policies. Since before the Civil War, farmers black and white in the South have always used loans to buy seed and fertilizer in the spring. But this was denied to blacks in a calculated land grab.

An earlier monumental theft of land by the Yankee banking crowd happened during Reconstruction... 80% interest. Then they came down and logged every single tree in the Southeast except within our towns.

General Sherman started that land grab. After Lincoln was killed, President Andrew Johnson revoked Sherman’s orders and returned the stolen land back to the original owners.

A significant number of the platiffs never intended to farm in the first place. They were bused to meetings organized by lawyers representing so called “black farmer organizations” and were told to simply fill out affidavits stated they wanted to farm and were denied loans - bingo they get $50,000.

No tractor, no barn, no land, no workboots and they get $50,000 for watching one episode of Green Acres.

“The majority of Confederate soldiers did not have slaves. Type in black confederate soldiers and you’ll find some interesting info such as approx 65,000 blacks served in the CSA, and over 13,000 saw combat.”

Indeed. I talked about this in my book. Many volunteered to serve with their masters, and referred the the CW as ‘the war of Northern Aggression. Much of what I referred to was taken from direct testimony of former slaves in 1937.

You are right. I didn't know the part about returning the land back to it's owners:

By June 1865, around 10,000 freed slaves were settled on 400,000 acres (160,000 ha) in Georgia and South Carolina. Soon after, President Andrew Johnson reversed the order and returned the land to its white former owners. Because of this, the phrase has come to represent the failure of Reconstruction and the general public to assist African Americans.
