Trend surfaces: Islamist Web sites soliciting info on ships

A group that monitors Islamist Web sites has noted a disturbing trend - Internet posts from prominent contributors discussing attacks on U.S. warships.

Online threats against U.S. interests are not uncommon, and Internet propaganda is nothing new, said Steven Stalinsky, executive director of the Washington-based Middle East Media Research Institute, which translated the posts. But he said the recent posts are more significant because they come in response to an official communique from al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, the terror group linked to the attempted bombing of a commercial American jetliner on Christmas. It urged followers to kill "Crusaders" on land, in the air and at sea.

One Dec. 30 posting on the forum Al-Falluja directed readers to gather intelligence on U.S. Navy targets.

"My Muslim brothers, do not underestimate the importance of any piece of information, as simple as it may seem; the mujahideen, the lions of monotheism, may be able to use it in ways that have not occurred to you."

The information that should be quietly gathered, the posting continues, includes "(the vessel's) name, the missions it is assigned; its current location, including notation of the spot in accordance with international maritime standards; the advantages of this naval unit; the number of U.S. troops on board, including if possible their ranks, and what state they are from, their family situation, and where their family members (wife and children) live; what kind of weapons they carry; the (vessel's) destination... the missions it has carried out; the (recommended) way to monitor it around the clock."

One sure thing that Pearl Harbor and the USS Cole showed is that a ship in harbor is a much easier target than one at sea. On the other hand if we stop using foreign ports in order to protect our ships the will have all but cut off the supply of our forces in the middle east.

You are not going to keep division level units supplied with an airlift. At least not for very long. And without the credible threat of warships in the area the Somali pirates could cut off our access to the Persian Gulf.

No surprise.

Just an indicator they are using smart tactics.

Replace the word vessel with the word Muslim:

The information that should be quietly gathered, the posting continues, includes “(the vessel’s) name, the missions it is assigned; its current location, including notation of the spot in accordance with international maritime standards; the advantages of this naval unit; the number of U.S. troops on board, including if possible their ranks, and what state they are from, their family situation, and where their family members (wife and children) live; what kind of weapons they carry; the (vessel’s) destination... the missions it has carried out; the (recommended) way to monitor it around the clock.”

They aren't going to go after airliners. That's where Obama has put all the attention and most of the resources. Washington is desperate to stop another air travel-related terrorist attack.

Smart terrorist will make good use of this diversion, cancel all efforts related to air travel, and instead focus on other areas -- such as shipping.

“...al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula...” would be the fellows in Yemen. Bomb. Back to the Stone Age. Now. Also: quarantine. No one in or out of that hell hole until further notice. Saudis need to do their part on their border.

Obama is blindly applying the same as what russians did with their five year plans focussing resounces on one objective while all others are neglected. Obama is no the mans to solve this problem. His muslim faith prohibits him from protecting Americans.

It shouldn’t be a surprise but unless this information gets some media attention it probably can’t be thwarted.

I wonder how many muslims in our military will heed that call?Even one providing any information is too many.

Asking for muslims to get the names and addresses of Sailors families is particularly chilling.

Thank you for posting this. It will get spread.

It’s a good thing I am not in charge. If I were, there would be muslim airplanes and muslim ships; and muslims would not be allowed to use anyone else’s.

Next case.

This almost sounds like the terrorists are trying to get info on the crew members as much as the ships.

Could this be to coerce the crew member by kidnapping family members or to demoralize the crew members by attacking the families directly?

If enough military families are attacked, in connection to a particular ship or unit, it could render the entire unit or naval ship undermanned and not mission ready. Plus it would demoralize much of our military overseas since they will see NObama as failing to protect their families. It would also terrorize the families that fear an imminent attack. Everyone would be left wondering who would be attacked next.

I have been waiting for them to hit a cruse ship. Big fat unprotected target filled with infidels. There coming and goings are public and timely. They travel to ports with little or no security. Personally I am amazed they have not hit one, just think of the spectacle of carnage.

And I get on one in two weeks.

If that happened, there would be a groundswell of rage in the American public that not even the liberal press could quell. Muslims in the U.S. could all find themselves on very thin ice.

We are at war.

The current admin seems to think it’s a criminal procedure, that’s the really dangerous thing.
