Quite an explosive leak! I wonder how this will affect things? It is certainly a thuggish and dangerous thing for Obama to play with National Security over this craptacular idea of socialized medicine. Quite a desperate move.
According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska’s Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn’t fall into line. Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a “naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson’s vote.” They are “threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?” asked the Senate staffer.
Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.
So much for the idea of Obama trying to save jobs and improve the economy!
Without Nelson’s vote, since all Republicans are still in line to oppose this, Reid is still left with 59 votes. So, some arm twisting is taking place. Nelson doesn’t want this bill to fund abortions so he is now being threatened, and national security along with him. How shameful this would be if Democrats felt shame.

The Obama administration has little left to use for leverage. Why not national security? After all, if we’re going to bring terrorists into Illinois, what does it matter if we put the US Strategic Command on wheels for a few years?

Yes political bases have been used as political pawns in prior administrations, however has our entire nuclear arsenal control and command ever been put up for auction for a bill 69% of the public does not support?
Given Obama’s wish to rid the US of Nukes, could this be the first step?

If they democRATS pass amnesty, it might not matter who we vote for in 2010. They’ll get their perpetual majority.

That base cannot be closed!! It is the absolute hub of our strategic command and control system. It has billions and billions of one-of-a-kind systems that have been installed there over the decades since it was SAC Headquarters.
It would be easier and have a smaller impact to close the White House. Zero the idiot doesn’t even know what he is talking about. What a moron!!!

I’d definitely contact the Senator and ask the question. I’d also recommend that he, if this is true, call a press conference, switch parties and vote NO on the bill.
Wonder if Nelson will roll over to have his tummy rubbed.
If this is true, which I’m sure it is, then this Senator should Change party and hold a press conference, saying he does not respond to blackmail.
I hope the good people of Nebraska get on Nelson, en masse, and dare Zero to try! He needs to call Zero’s bluff!
The base closures are supposed to be non-partisan. Politicizing national defense for personal gain is blatantly un-American.
I can’t wait to impeach this douchebag in 2011.

I wonder if we can make it a stipulation to anyone new coming into those seats in 2010, that in order for them to be voted in they must agree to being impeachment processes.....you know if Nelson stands his ground, the base won’t close overnight. Perhaps by 2010, the ruling can be reversed...just a thought;)

Nelson better vote against these thugs or the thugs will own him forever along with everyone else. What are they so afraid of. BO has alot more to be afraid of if the congressmen he is trying to bribe stand up to him and tell the press what’s going on.
The bloodshed would happen regardless, perhaps after the obozo consolidates more power. Better that it happen sooner while more of the citizens are still armed.
Nelsen should stand by whatever convictions he has left and vote no.

BRAC closings are over. Offut is not on any BRAC list and there won’t be any new BRACs scheduled, so there’s no way Obama could be using BRAC to close it. I wouldn’t put much crdibility in this story.
And it doesn’t matter anyway. There was never any doubt that the 60 Democrats were not going to vote for this fiasco. The phony posturing by Nelson, Lieberman, and their ilk was just for publicity among the Inside-the-Beltway set. They were always going to support Obamacare, as will they all support Capand Tax, Amnesty for illegals, and all the other Obama proposals.
Better that it happen sooner while more of the citizens are still armed.
