What is on appearances possibly just another right wing publicity stunt is actually something that law enforcement and military commanders need to notice and to put in check. The "Oathkeepers" are a group supposedly dedicated to keeping the "Oath" to protect the Constitution. Fact is, they already took that oath, This new thing is an attempt to rile up disdain for the Obama Administration, masquerading as concern for American freedom.
Who are the "Oathkeepers?" Groups of law enforcement and military personnel who swear a new oath of allegiance to ideals put forth by the group, not by consent of the governed or as proscribed by the Constitution these "patriots" claim to be defending. Need convincing that they aren't just paramilitary malcontents who happen to be wearing uniforms? Look at their website.
On www.oathkeepers.org they list ten "Orders we will not obey" which include some admirable ideals. That some of what they espouse is admirable isn't in question. Of course every soldier has the obligation to fight orders which, for example, might constitute a war crime. Where the problems lie are with the motivations and perceptions of their place.
Look around the Oathkeepers site more and some troubling things show themselves. They say "We are not advocating violence" yet that is exactly the subtext of what is on the site. References aren't made to some possible threat to the Constitution in the future, but to the sitting government and their Commander in Chief, President Barack Obama.
The Oathkeepers are nothing more than an anti-Obama paramilitary group. And what they are doing should be reprimanded by their chain of command. To pledge to willfully obey orders is in direct conflict with the Uniform Code of Military Justice, or UCMJ. Some of what they suggest sounds like conspiracy to commit sedition.

In that kind of “dance”, the more the merrier...
Rush had a great segment about this shortly after the inauguration. It was very inspiring.
I’ve joined. I mean it, too.
We all stand at the hot gates not unlike the 300 did so many years ago. Will future generations write that we stood or that we cowered and hid from the fight letting the world fall in to total darkness?
I will stand at the hot gates with men of honor and courage.
Better I fall on my feet then bend my knees to tyrants.
“A people unwilling to use extreme violent force to obtain or preserve their liberty deserves the tyrant that rules them.”
I'll mail them a check in the morning post.
My word on it...
My worry is that the 40% in the military, leave the other 60% to fend for themselves in places like Iraq and Afganistan. This will be followed by that same 40% returning to the U.S. and joining the 40% of LEOs in the tank for socialisim.
I pray it never gets to this, but if it does, I hope we have the numbers necessary to prevail.
I love the OathKeepers. They are keeping me safe and preserving freedom.
I think if you have ever taken an oath in the past, the idea is that you should not repudiate that oath just because you have been discharged, inactive, etc.
Rules to survive:
1. Buy ammo
2. repeat number 1
:-).
Yep...just easier to blame it all on Bush(picture Rove, Cheney, and Bush with cattle prods chasing protesters into fenced enclosures).
I’m sure Neal would have had no problem joining 4 years ago.
Hey Fossil, nice to see you, and you bet they will have a lot of help. I’m pretty sure there are alot of folks willing and ready to cross the Rubicon if the time comes.
How are things up your way in big sky country? We’re getting a little rain tonight down here, but not much.
Poll numbers for Zero and the RAT Socialists are headed for the toilet bowl. Their numbers are falling by the hour. Everyone I talk to despises them all. We The People will be cleaning Congress come 2010 and 2012. Time to sweep out the garbage and send it back to the sewer where it was spawned. Pelosi can be Speaker of the Sewer where she belongs.
Actually I don’t even blame the free speech zones on Clinton. If the Seattle protesters had behaved like the 9/12 tea partiers, I doubt that the no protest zones would even exist.
I actually sympathize with some of the anti WTO crowd but I have no sympathy for their methods.
I’m gonna be a boot!
I love it...when people get scared they do really stupid stuff. Time to buy more popcorn.
>> Otherwise, I hope it never gets to that point, but I’m glad there are police and soldiers who are watchful enough that they refuse to become a latter day incarnation of Hitler’s storm troopers.
Myself, I’m counting heavily on their integrity.
In my view, the *ONLY* federal government agency that has any integrity and professionalism at all is our military. I have no doubt that if a corrupt CinC tried to order them in unconstitutional directions, they would refuse to go there.
I’m a little bit more concerned about some (not all) local police forces. As “real” crime drops, their reason for being is all wrapped up in enforcing environmental laws, hate crime prevention, and other such nonsense.
But I’m betting that any police officer that joins OathKeepers “gets it”. It’s not them that I’m worried about.
FRegards
