A PR Nightmare for the Obamas
NationalReview.com ^ | Friday, October 2, 2009 | Victor Davis Hanson

One can understand an American president’s lobbying for an American city to obtain the Olympics, but the blitz by the Obamas proved a PR nightmare. Let us count the ways:

1) Obama’s brand is trans-nationalism and an “America is not exceptional” multiculturalism. According to his worldview, it makes sense that a South American country — especially a powerful, ascendant country such as Brazil — should at last have its turn at hosting the Olympics. It did not seem consistent that a politician who had reached out to the Castros, Chávez, Morales, and Ortega, in parochial fashion, would lobby for his own hometown over a “yes, we can” Latin American initiative, especially one involving an exciting city such as Rio.

2) The Obama lobbying speeches were counterproductive. The world has its own inspirational narratives and is not impressed that much by the Obamas’ Chicago sagas. It was accidental but unfortunate that the global viewers had seen some horrific YouTube clips of street fighting in the Windy City, and then were told by Michelle that her father had taught her how to land a right hook, and that it was a sacrifice for her to fly to Denmark to make the case for Chicago.

3) The Chicago bit was overdone. Obama should remember that there is a perfect storm brewing: The more we hear about Valerie Jarrett, Rahm Emanuel, Bill Ayers, and all his old Chicago friends, along with rumors about Tony Rezko–style backroom deals to cash in on Chicago real estate involving the Olympics, and continuing stories about Chicago’s street violence and corruption — the more it hurts the president to be identified as a “Chicago politician” who tries in heavy-handed fashion to implement change through the “Chicago way.” To a younger Obama, Chicago was the romantic can-do town of Reverend Wright, Michael Jordan, Oprah, and the Daley machine; to the world at large, it is something quite different, and far more unappealing.

4) Obama’s messianic appeal is wearing thin, both at home and abroad. I think that once Sarkozy essentially said to the world, “The emperor has no clothes,” the Obama facade crumbled. And here we are.

Chicago got 18 votes out of 94.

FAIL.

Why can’t Chicago DO anything about these thug gangs

Because they are in training to be good democrats, that's why!

Stockyards have been closed down for decades. And my experience sometime in the ‘90’s was that people from outside Chicago associated it with Michael Jordan, not Al Capone.

My most memorable vision of Chicago was when, as a young navy enlisted man, I had to take a train in those parts, a train which went through the south side, which looked like Beirut, complete with fires in trash cans, block after block of crumbled buildings, poverty and dysfunction. I have absolutely hated the place ever since!

Sorry Victor, but I absolutely cannot understand it. No other US President has *ever* done such a thing, and for good reason. That this arrogant, narcissistic boob has done so, and failed spectacularly in his attempt, demonstrates two things.

First, it demonstrates the *why* it had nevre been done before. US Presidents have only a finite amount of "political capital" to lay on the line for things, either domestically, or globally. It should never be squandered in such a manner.

Secondly, it demonstrates the complete and utter lack of maturity on the part of the current resident of 1600 Pennsylavania Avenue, Washington, DC. The idea that he even *could* accomplish this, setting aside the idea whether or not it *should* have been done, clearly demonstrates, beyond any conceivable doubt, that he is "not ready for prime time"...

It’s difficult to pick a “worst moment” of the Obama escapade in Copenhagen: there were so many horribly ridiculous ones.

But if hardpressed, I would say that Michelle’s speech about her girlhood in Chicago was pretty bad. It sounds like it came straight from an Oprah script. And it was full of lies.

Michelle grew up in a nice home in a good neighborhood with responsible middleclass parents. She breezed through Princeton on an affirmative action scholarship, and graduated despite some poorly written and poorly reasoned theses.

She tries to display herself as one of those poor kids like the honor student who was stomped to death last week by a bunch of crazed animals.

Michelle is as hollow a woman as her husband is a hollow man.

There are still alot of areas of the city like those you remember. The Loop and lakefront areas are beautiful, but there are neighborhoods I wouldn’t venture into—like any city. But there is also a growing Black middle class. There are areas on the outer fringes of the ghettos that are looking surprisingly good. I hope someday soon they start voting in terms of economics rather than race.

If he doesn’t quit first!

I, too, have been pushing the "quit" meme for some time, including this post recently:

0bama will realize that he really doesn't like being president, people are laughing at him, that he doesn't want the job, and will quit. This is my intuitive feeling and I'm sticking to it. 11 posted on Friday, October 02, 2009 2:14:00 PM by happygrl (Hope and Change or Rope and Chains?)

That's my take on 0bama as well. I think he'll quit.

This is waaaay more work than he's used to.

But he'll camouflage it with a "health issue."

Don’t be surprised if he doesn’t order all American troops guarding Europe home.

No, 0bama will order American troops to evacuate the Muslims in Europe when civil war breaks out there

Remember he stated that, if violence threatens their community, he will "stand with the Muslims."

He will order our troops to shoot at other NATO troops which are guarding European towns and communities, in order to provide safe passage for these people, and to admit them as refugees into this country, millions and millions of them.

I think Hillary is out of the picture because the simple math that turned off potential donors in 2008 will do the same in 2012: there are no “undecideds” with her; you either love her or hate her, and not enough people love her. In addition, she’ll look 4 years older (scary!).

I agree with your intuition! He’s going to walk away from the job. The whole Chicago Olympic thing is part of it. He wants to do the easy stuff. For goodness sakes he can’t even come up with a plan for Afghanistan. Now they are promoting the BIDEN plan. Hmmm ... I thought the media said the Vice President (Cheney) was telling Bush what to do but now it’s okay for BIDEN to tell Obama what to do? Media = HYPROCRISY

Why would the IOC want the games in Chicago if it meant that it was about Bam and not about the games? Very rational an the part of the IOC, they saw thru his game.

I see very little rationality in the IOC and the Olympics is tainted with the selection of the butchers of Beijing.

With the possible exception of San Francisco, Chicago was like the worst possible choice of an American city for the Olympics.

Oprah may be well-known here in the states, but she a virtual unknown outside this country.

Not so. Her show is dubbed and extremely popular in Japan, for example. Jerry Springer is very big on Japanese TV too ...
