Obama: Afghanistan not 'American battle' but NATO mission

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama said Tuesday the war in Afghanistan was not purely an "American battle" but was a broader NATO mission, as he met the western alliance's chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen. "This is not a American battle, this is a NATO mission," Obama told reporters after the Oval Office meeting, which comes as he launches a series of intense talks on whether to send more US soldiers to the Afghan war. "We are working actively and diligently to consult with NATO at every step of the way," Obama said. NATO Secretary-General Rasmussen put on a united front with Obama, arguing that "our operation in Afghanistan is not America's responsibility or burden alone, it is and it will remain a team effort." "I agree with President Obama in his approach: strategy first, then resources," Rasmussen said, adding that all NATO members were studying a grim report on the war by US commander General Stanley McChrystal. "This alliance will stay united and we will stay in Afghanistan as long as it takes to finish our job."

I HAVE to be missing something here. He has done a complete about face on his Afghanistan position that he campaigned on. But why?>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

UMM...AH ....He lied to get elected, knowing he would get the moderate swing vote.He sure as hell isn't setting himself on fire on making a decision about the troops, because he knows what the right thing is, but simply refuses to do it.

Europe will do it for us, and snub Obama, the first president to step away from the obligation to be leader of the Free World. Bibi Nethamyahu is that leader now.

Obama is just another pol, bent on manipulating himself into power and keeping it. He has no integrity, and the Europeans know it. Europe does not really like Obama very much.

“Review of battle disaster sways Afghan strategy:Deadly 4-hour firefight becomes template for how not to win the war

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2354119/posts

“...That firefight, a debacle that cost nine American lives in July 2008, has become the new template for how not to win in Afghanistan. The calamity and its roots have been described in bitter, painstaking detail in an unreleased Army history, a devastating narrative that has begun to circulate in an initial form even as the military opened a formal review this week of decisions made up and down the chain of command.

The 248-page draft history, obtained by The New York Times, helps explain why the new commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, is pressing so hard for a full-fledged commitment to a style of counterinsurgency that rests on winning over the people of Afghanistan even more than killing militants. The military has already incorporated lessons from the battle in the new doctrine for war in Afghanistan...”

Afghan soldier shoots dead two American troops
Sat Oct 3, 2009 10:34am EDT

KABUL (Reuters) - An Afghan soldier on guard at a joint base with U.S. troops shot dead two American servicemen and wounded two others as they slept, a provincial official said on Saturday.

Shahedullah Shahed, spokesman for the governor of Wardak province west of Kabul, said the shooting took place after a combined team of Afghan and U.S. forces had returned from a joint operation late on Friday.

"The Americans were in the middle of sleep when an Afghan soldier on duty opened fire on them," Shahed said.

"We have no clue as to why he shot them."

A statement from NATO-led forces said two American soldiers died from injuries suffered in a "hostile attack" in eastern Afghanistan on Friday. A press officer for the Western troops said he could give no further details of the incident.

It’s getting so every second of every day is bad news. My stomach has been turning for so long, I think it is upside down now.
I seriously do not know if the country can withstand this. SERIOUSLY!

Memories:

“(CBS)_An American soldier is among three suspects being held in connection with a grenade and small-arms attack that injured at least 16 U.S. soldiers at Camp Pennsylvania in northern Kuwait, reports CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassman, who is on the scene with the Army’s 101st Airborne Division.

Eleven of the injured were hurt so seriously they had to be choppered out of the camp.

Strassmann said three grenades were rolled into three officers’ tents at the camp. When officers ran from the tents, they were hit by small arms fire.

Three suspects were being held for questioning: two Kuwaitis who served as translators and an American soldier described as an engineering sergeant.

The American was found injured and hiding in a bunker. Asked if he was hurt throwing a grenade, Strassman reports the soldier replied, “Yes.”

Separately, Strassmann reported, an Iraqi rocket fired at U.S. forces in Kuwait was destroyed by Patriot missiles launched from nearby Camp New Jersey.

The attacks on U.S. troops came as the American assault on Iraq gained steam.
American and British forces besieged the southern city of Basra and pounded Baghdad with impunity.”

My Grandfather was there in the 1st row at St Doms Arena in Lewiston, Maine for that fight. He told me it was a dive. He met Sonny Liston in person while working at a nursing home that week. His job was being the handyman at the building. My Great Uncle (Pepere’s brother in law who owned the home) got him front row seats. Robert Goulet screwed up the national anthem that night. My Grandfather told me Goulet was drunk.

All the names of those KIA since McChrystal asked for more Troops is on my profile page, as is an mp3 of Taps and Our Flag at Half Staff.
No one should still be kidding themselves that obama wants to fight, much less WIN this war.
Mr. bam, we will NOT blame NATO. Our TROOPS’ BLOOD IS ON YOUR HANDS.
WE WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU. MAY G-D NEVER ALLOW YOU PEACE NOR REST. AN ETERNITY IN AGONY IS A BETTER REWARD THAN YOU DESERVE. AMEN

I read you list of recent KIA in Afgahanistan with deep sadness. The CinC gave 25 minutes to McChrystal on AF1 on Friday. I remember a certain President who spent more time getting a hair cut on the tarmac in AF1 holding up traffic at LAX. What a shame these 2 hucksters are.
