BANGKOK For the first time, an experimental vaccine has prevented infection with the AIDS virus, a watershed event in the deadly epidemic and a surprising result. Recent failures led many scientists to think such a vaccine might never be possible.
The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.
Even though the benefit is modest, "it's the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine," Col. Jerome Kim said in a telephone interview. He helped lead the study for the U.S. Army, which sponsored it with the National

While this is excellent news as it may prevent children from getting the disease or even given to those who have bleeding disorders and need many transfusions. I can see it giving a false sense of security and a green flag to continue with a destructive lifestyle.

People tend to forget that there is plenty of STDs out there with no cure.

Not to mention there seems to be some evidence that the more partners you have the higher the cancer risk you have.

"The vaccine cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok." So, they are saying 16,000 people volunteered to take this vacine, then be exposed to aids virus to see if it worked? This means they infected 11040 more people with aids? Wonderfull. Or BS.

That’s nice. Not something I will ever need.

You say that, until some junky assaults you with a hypo needle as a weapon. It isn’t always about promiscuous sex.

You must remember that a virus mutates. The AIDS virus has many different strains.

I recently saw on TV that the HIV virus has mutated. It was in a documentary but I don’t remember which one it was. It’s doubtful the new vaccine will help those affected with the new strain.

HIV has an infamously high mutation rate which allows it to constantly evade new medications introduced to combat it.

Clearly it’s a BS story. I can’t see 11,000 people volunteering to be purposely infected with aids.
And like you say, it means nothing because the virus mutates.
It’s easy to develop a vaccine for a single strain. The problem has always been that it mutates rapidly making those vaccines useless.

No different from them stabbing you with a knife. I would sincerely hope they would have 2 new orifices by that point.

I was thinking the exact same thing. In order to test it, wouldn’t they have had to inject people with the vaccine and then inject them with the AIDS virus to see if the vaccine worked? Who would volunteer for this? So now 11,040 more people have AIDS?
