They have the sheer numbers to put through any bill they want. They know they are in VERY SERIOUS trouble now in the upcoming elections, in fact, it could be devastating for them. So, in order to ensure their planned agenda of socialism moves forward regardless of upcoming election outcomes they must pass a Government Health care plan that can undercut and eventually eliminate all private insurance. Even if they lose the presidency next go around, they will have won the war. And they can continue to rule from that point forward without even winning the White House.
The stakes are very high, but my gut feeling is telling me that they are going to put this through against the will of the people knowing full well it can never be undone. Eventually, complete control will be theirs. They know that increasingly Americans are less Christian, are taught nothing of liberty in schools, and that they will end up in the White House again. If I was Obama, and working for the other team, then that is exactly what I would do, pass a Government Health Care plan regardless of the feelings of the American people. Since the MSM now basically writes the history books Obama will be a martyr, not appreciated in his time, because he will surely lose the next presidential race over the health care bill. However, he will be hailed as the one who steered the great ship of capitalism away from the rocks and toward a world of peace and harmony. The democrats will have ensured the path of this country is forever theirs...

The pessimism and defeatism of some Freepers is pretty amazing sometimes. It won’t pass. The votes aren’t there for a public option in the Senate and probably aren’t there in the House, where 37 Blue-Dog Democrats are on the record against the public option.
If it does pass, the tax increases will take effect and choke off any recovery at a time of national insolvency, leading to higher unemployment. If you live in a major city, I would consider moving.
Either way, the RATS are screwed. They have no pro-growth policy prescriptions. Their agenda is the agenda of a parasite. Obeyme and the RATS failure will be epic.

I'm not going to hang my hat on the slim chance of getting this POS bill repealed later. Personally, I'm sick of seeing some Freepers drooling with glee over the passage of this bill, just because they think the Republicans will score some kind of political points in the next election. Screw both of the parties. This is much bigger than parties. The fate of our free society is at stake.

The Rats have psyched everyone out... even conservative people think you can't reverse or nullify legislation. It is another victory of the goobermint skools over the mind of the electorate (if you want to call it a 'mind'.)
The most excellent example of a big law that fell hard is the passage of the 21st Amendment.
It should be the template of what a Reform-oriented GOP will be doing in 2010.

Timing is everything. I can't read their mind but it seems like the politics of the day is to "wait and see" what zer0 has to say and then react.

If you think prohibition's unpopularity makes this a mirror comparison, think again. Prohibition = Immensely unpopular. Public Option = Immensely unpopular. Americans have proven that the "gift" of free healthcare is NOT a popular option. It's not the dichotomy of the two examples, but the similarity of public non-support that's important.
As I stated, I'm not saying this would be easy. But you asked for a past instance of repeal. I provided one. And I stand on the comparison.
As you observe, we are in a culture war.

A bill giving this much power to a pack of hungry bureaucrats...whether they're Republican, Libertarian, Democrat or WHATEVER...isn't going away peacefully.
I never said repeal would be easy; just that it would be possible. We’re at a watershed in our nation’s history. Far more Americans have woke up to what confronts them than I’d have ever imagined. We can’t predict the future, but politically, I’d say the Democrats are on very precarious ground. And in the political turmoil that would ensue, I’d hate to make predictions that a repeal of government controlled healthcare is a non-starter. American politics is going to get ugly. Real ugly, and real soon. Don’t make decisions based on paradigms of the past.
It certainly won't be easy, but I think invoking either Reagan or 1994 is a little inaccurate. While we aren't there yet we are starting to develop a few people who recognize that "rolling back" isn't enough: we need an activist agenda to dectonstruction federal and state power at all levels. This must be 24/7. I suggested limitations on the # of congressional staff to 2 per. Another (good suggestion someone had) was to require legislators to physcially be in their home states "x" percent of the time (very high) because there is no real need for them to be in WA with the internet, etc. They can vote from Dallas or San Diego. The value of this is that it destroys some, perhaps much, of the power of K street.
But regardless, a NEW BREED of "conservative" must arise who isn't JUST focused on "keeping things where they are" or "slow growth," but activist reductions in federal power using novel and innovative approaches.
I would agree with one small exception. A revolution could nullify everything. It would probably be the only chance by that point.
As a poster earlier in the thread said, the Dems will be screaming "The dirty GOP wants to take away your healthcare so you die in the streets!!1!" from here to eternity. It's naive to believe that there will be any serious effort to remove government healthcare at that point. It will be the new third rail of politics.
Look at SSI. Everybody my age (Gen X) knows it's going to be broke soon. Hell, just about everyone in the whole country recognizes that. Did that help GWB when he floated the trial balloon of reform? Nope, he got sniped at so bad he had to stick his head back in the foxhole. SSI (along with all other big government giveaways) will have to completely implode. They are all doomed.
I asked for a past instance of a repeal of a major government giveaway. Prohibition was definitely not a program of government wealth redistribution.
