Obama holiday in Martha’s Vineyard overshadowed by healthcare protests

Barack Obama began a family holiday on Martha’s Vineyard yesterday, taking care to duck a politically risky photo op of his arrival on the wealthy summer retreat lampooned as a “liberal lido”.

The White House allowed cameras to record the Obama family’s arrival in Air Force One at Otis Air Force Base on nearby Cape Cod, but refused to permit coverage of the Obamas landing by helicopter on the island.

Conservatives have mocked Mr Obama’s choice of the Democrat-dominated resort off the Masschusetts coast for his week-long holiday.

A group called Conservatives for Patients’ Rights has spent $150,000 to run TV ads entitled “Surf’s Up” in Martha’s Vineyard and Boston opposing Mr Obama’s proposed healthcare reforms.

“The beach is nice this time of year,” the ad says. “But while President Obama vacations, concerns mount about his healthcare plan.” The ads could interfere with Mr Obama’s rest and relaxation on the rented 28-acre Blue Heron Farm because they are scheduled to air during matches between the local Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox, the president’s favourite team.

Over the years, the area around Martha’s Vineyard has been the site of some major embarrassments to Democratic leaders.

In July 1969, Senator Edward Kennedy crashed his car on a bridge on the nearby island of Chappaquiddick, killing a female campaign worker, Mary Jo Kopechne.

In the 1990s, then-President Bill Clinton bought presents for his mistress Monica Lewinsky at the Vineyard’s famous Black Dog shop.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, Republicans ran negative ads ridiculing Democratic candidate Senator John Kerry for windsurfing off nearby Nantucket.

For Mr Obama, the week-long holiday holds the prospect of a meeting with Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, the Harvard University professor arrested last month in his own home.

Mr Gates, a longtime friend, helped to introduce Mr

ROFL! Those British papers really cover the news differently than the American ones.

I bet Zer0 won’t have a problem with the captive media cameras shooting him emerging from the surf in another one of those homo-erotic photo ops that gets the limp wrists all excited.

The government pays for a fine recreatiojn spot for the President. It’s called Camp David.

That isnt good enough for banbil he has to have Air Force One take him up to Martha’s Vineyard. Now Air Force One is a paltry expense. How many trops, secret service, and servant clas people went with him. How many helicopters did we fly up there, how many cargo planes took his things up there?

In other words while we are all wondering how to pay our bills , what is this costing us.?

From the article: He is not going to make the same mistake John Kerry made. He is going to hang out in Oak Bluffs and Chilmark. He is going to wear jeans.

Mom jeans alert.

Must be nice to fly to NY and Paris for dates and then to a $20 Million Marthas Vineyard house for vacation while 6 million people are out of work because of you. Very compassionate.

Pray for America and Our Freedom Fighters
