There is a lot of confusion surrounding Zanzibar vs Kenya, especially regarding the Coast Province. Depending on who claimed what, there could have been any number of official documents from both places that unintentionally overlapped.

It is possible that more than one official record of birth exists in several different places, but ALL of them would be in the Brit Archives since they were still overseeing their protectorate at the time.

Unless you have seen the actual physical document to say for certain that he was born in Colon, you might want to consider what Leahy put in the April 08 resolution. His ‘whereas’ refers to McCain born on a military installation in the Canal Zone, so he had something tangible which allowed him to make that assertion, not an opinion based upon an Internet image of some claimed dsocument. His mother (McCain’s) insists he was born in the Zone and she was definitley there at his birth!

I CANNOT stress this enough - this area was UNIQUE and different from the other land in Kenya! This would have included Mombasa up until Oct 5, 1963, Obama JR's possible place of birth in Aug 1961, in addition to the possible location of Obama SR's and Ann Dunham's marriage in February 1961. IOW, it gives us another place to look other than in Kenyan and BNA records ...

The Sultan of Zanzibar hived off an area of 10 miles from the Indian Ocean water mark and placed it under his rule. It is known as the 10-mile Coastal Strip. It did not fall under the British Protectorate like the rest of Kenya but was ruled from Zanzibar

“When the country got independence in 1963, this area was annexed to the rest of the country from Zanzibar, but the first African Government did not include it in its initial land policies,” said Mr Kapombe.

The ten-mile coastal strip of land is as controversial as landlessness and squatters. The history of this piece of land, stretching ten miles from the Indian Ocean to the hinterland, has remained contentious.

In a letter dated October 5, 1963, Kenyatta bound his government to some undertaking in recognition of the coastal strip. “I have the honour to refer to the discussions held between our respective governments on the subject of the coastal strip and to place on record the following undertakings by the Government of Kenya,” reads the letter to the prime minister of Zanzibar.

His note further reads: “The free hold titles to land in Coast region that are already registered will at all times be recognised. Steps will be taken to ensure the continuation procedure for the registration of new free hold titles and the rights of free holders will at all times be preserved”. (Note: the Sultan of Zanzibar fled after a revolution that took place barely three months later)

The letter was used as a legal instrument binding the Government to respect the status quo of land prior to independence.

Highways connect Mombasa to capital Nairobi, former Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam while northward road link to Malindi and Lamu. Within Mombasa, most local people use Matatus (minibuses) to move between villages and Mombasa Island. Mombasa port is the largest in Kenya but there is little or no scheduled passenger service.

International cruise ships frequent the port, thus giving Mombasa a “Natural Harbour.”

Note that the routing on Qantas in August 1962 from Nairobi goes to both San Francisco (near where Susan Blake was visiting in Santa Cruz [leaving when the fires broke out] before "meeting" Ann in Seattle), as well as Vancouver.

Briefly, yes, legal treatises regarding the Law of Nations exist from many centuries throughout the history of international relations. While Vattel’s work was not the singular source utilized by the Founding Fathers, they did indeed remark on numerous occasions about using it as an important source for their legal research for the Constitution and other legal activities. Several Supreme Court decisions have acknowledged Vattel as a source for the law regarding citizenship. It takes time to assemble the citations, but they do esit. What if she DID give birth at sea?

Long shot, certainly, but I have found Fred Nerks’ posts on the “African Colonial” thread fascinating, including his mentions of the Black Star Line and shipping to and from Ghana.

Were they strictly freighters, or was there passenger service? Would there be 1961 passenger — or even birth or marriage — records of voyages on those ships?

Mombasa has a deep harbor. Did the Black Star Line operate there?

Ann Dunham traveled, and the easiest and fastest way is by air. However, it’s also the most expensive. I keep wondering how this teenager, the daughter of parents of moderate means, supposed wife to a well-connected student with no particular means of support, found the money to fly all over the world.

It would certainly be interesting to see if she appears on any incoming or outgoing passenger manifest anytime in 1961.

Again, a very long shot, but this is one weird story.

Since the airport in Mombasa was originally used by the British government, what are the chances that a British Air line serviced it? Also notice the train ran from Nairobi to Mombasa.

Thought it was interesting that cruise ships call at the port....Remember Mombasa is a “Spice Port” -cloves and would have regular shipments leaving from the port with possible quarters for passengers.

And another, where the brother of Malcolm X was interviewed after meeting a ship of the Black Star Line; saying how proud he felt...because his parents were ‘Garveyites’ - and the Black Star Line, orginally established by Marcus Garvey, re-established by Nukrumah shortly after Ghana independance, had a special place in the hearts of all Pan-African supporting African-Americans.

The Black Star Line indeed offered passenger berths on some of its 14 cargo ships that travelled to ports around the world.

Records? The Line was Israeli registered. But from 196l? I doubt it. There are several Freepers looking...we could use some help.

Your thinking in parallel lines to most of us....Any idea where to get the ship manifests? I’m thinking there may be some type of “spice boat”. Any idea of which companies bought “clove” from Momsabic? Did they have their own ships?

My computer is slow (dial up) so it difficult to do the big searches.
