It could be a combination of 19th-century mechanics, 21st-century technology and a 20th-century horror movie.
A Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find grass, wood, old furniture, even dead bodies.

Are you sure this wasn’t from a script of the Movie “Wild Wild West II”?
steam-powered robot
Sounds like something Dr. Loveless came up with.

"That pic could replace Helen Thomas as the not hot babe."No, my vote for that would be the picture of the Code Pink behemoth sitting on a park bench with her belly hanging lower than the hem of her dress ...
I don't have that picture handy, but I'm sure that someone does.

Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship
So, nobody forsees the possibility of issues surrounding the building of a somewhat autonomous machine designed to kill people, and that feeds off dead bodies.
I can see it now - a "minor software glitch" sends one of these things on a smorgasbordian rampage...

Now here is an example of how military research spending can move over into the realm of civilian use.
Just imagine your auto being fitted with one of these engines. It will run on roadkill—and no more unsightly dead dogs lying around. Why people will be steering for those dead armadillos instead of away from them.

I especially like the idea of an ambulance which feeds off dead bodies. What could possibly go wrong?

I just keep seeing the Monty Python and the Holy Grail "I'm not dead yet" scene.
