People from Mississippi are fat. With an adult obesity rate of 33%, Mississippi gobbled its way to the "chubbiest state" crown for the fifth year in a row, according to a new joint report by Trust For America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Alabama, West Virginia, and Tennessee aren't far behind, with obesity rates over 30%. In fact, eight out of the 10 fattest states are in the South. The region famous for its biscuits, barbecue and pecan pies has been struggling with its weight for years but then again, so has the rest of the country. Wisconsin loves cheese, New Yorkers scarf pizza, and New Englanders have been known to enjoy a crab cake or two. So why is the South so portly?

Oops, you're a Yankee, that explains it...
after reading this thread, i find myself craving pork chops and gravy and mashed potatoes... and bbq ribs and fried chicken are my favorites... i am so hungry!
I bet he knows how to spell "you're" and knows that "a lot" is two words.
My wife laughs about that all the time. My family had Sunday dinner, both my brothers and there three kids, then I started bringing my wife (we lived in OKC, they lived in Seminole, a small town about an hour away).
It was roast, brown gravy, rice, green beans, corn, home made ice box rolls with honey, corn, host of other stuff, and when there was time, halved pears with Miracle Whip (not real mayonnaise) topped with shredded cheddar cheese. It was too sweet for me, but the plate was usually emptied by the time lunch was over.
The one good eating habit is that all of our vegetables were fresh. We either bought them fresh, or canned fresh vegetables, and it is a huge difference, expecially for corn and green beans.
Oh no, You gave them Yankees the secret! Please dont give out the secret to southern lemon aid, too.

Damn yankees...
that was pear salad to be exact.
(To be fair, I did learn it from watching Paula Deen on FN, my m-i-l always goes to the trouble of making separate pitchers no matter how much trouble, real Southern hospitality and all!)
Only one step down from the green Jello salad with fruit cocktail that was served with mayo-and-ketchup dressing, my aunt Angee made this EVERY Thanksgiving for salad!! What is with people, Jello is DESSERT!!
yeppers, most beauty contest finalist are from Ms. Al, Tn, Ga,Nc,Sc,Va. A young co-worker moved south from Ohio, he said he could not believe the number of beautiful women everywhere here. Maybe that, and the good food, is why northerners move here so much.
LOL!
pension = penchant
Excuse my ignorance, but is sweet tea just iced tea with sugar in it? Or is there something different and special about it?
I’m from California and have never visited the deep South, so any enlightenment would be helpful.
It was probably the pear as I’m not so fond of them. Paula Deen had a recipe for pineapple-cheddar cheese casserole that was super yummy, I brought it for a big family dinner as a side. It was hot and tangy and went so well with the roasted pork loin, I scored some points with that one. ;)
OMG - those are freakin’ HILARIOUS!!
It is just iced tea with sugar but not everyone can make good sweet tea. Like not everyone can make good coffee.
Ewwww! Fruit cocktail with mayo and ketchup! Ew!
Actually, Europeans used to make aspic as a savory side dish for a main meal. Gelatin is made from boiling meat bones and contains protein. Aspics contain some sort of vegetables or meat in a gelatin, and are usually made in fancy molds. The difference is, true aspics are NOT made with highly sweetened and dyed packaged dessert gelatin like Jello.
Here are a vegetable-nut aspic, and a tomato aspic. Both are made with unflavored clear gelatin:
Oh you are a laugh a minute. Please take your tour to Vegas. They need you bad.
