Excuse my ignorance, but is sweet tea just iced tea with sugar in it? Or is there something different and special about it?

I’m from California and have never visited the deep South, so any enlightenment would be helpful.

It is just iced tea with sugar but not everyone can make good sweet tea. Like not everyone can make good coffee.
